Brandon Moreno explains why he’s not focused on the title ahead of the UFC Mexico City main event

Brandon Moreno is taking it one fight at a time.

Moreno will headline Saturday’s UFC Mexico City against Lone’er Kavanagh in an intriguing flyweight bout. Kavanagh resigned at short notice, and although he is unranked, Moreno doesn’t care. Instead, Moreno just wants to return to the Octagon and get another win.

“No, I’m doing it because nothing happened to me in the last fight I had,” Moreno said said to Sportnet. “I feel super healthy. Right now I’m not even thinking about it; I’m just super focused on this fight. I took this fight because at first I really wanted to fight again, and it’s always super special to fight in my country.”

As Moreno notes, he’s just happy to get the chance to fight in Mexico because he doesn’t care about the opponent.

Meanwhile, Moreno is also keen to fight to get back into the win column. He’s coming off an injury loss to Tatsuro Taira, and Moreno just wants to fight and not worry about a title shot with a win.

“I don’t even care. The people, the media and the fans are more concerned about the rankings,” Moreno said. “I know the flyweight division is in flux a lot, but I don’t care. I just want to win this fight and be active. That’s the most important thing for me this year: be active. I want to win this fight and then fight as soon as possible.”

Moreno is currently ranked sixth at flyweight and is coming off a loss to Taira. Before that he had consecutive victories over Steve Erceg and Amir Albazi. The former flyweight champion lost his title in July 2023 when he dropped a split decision to Alexandre Pantoja.
