While the future of Connor McDavid looms about everything the Edmonton Oilers do, another decision quietly comes closer to the spotlight: the future of starting goalkeeper Stuart Skinner. Eligible to sign an extension now and for a deal that would kick the next summer, the 26-year-old is just in the middle of a debate that could form the long-term trajectory of the oilers.
On the one hand, Skinner Edmonton stopped back-to-back Stanley Cup performances on the back-to-back. He is not a Vezina, but he has shown that he can win behind a strong selection. On the other hand, Skinner would continue that Edmonton Klautert to stabilize the fold, and there is no guarantee that a better option is available.
It is daring to trade him this season, unless a clear upgrade shows itself on the trade market. To be honest, it can be reckless.
Ultimately, the choice comes down to this: lock Skinner at a reasonable price and hope that he is growing in the role, or makes a daring step to upgrade now before you commit in the long term. Both paths bear risks – and the oilers have not left much margin in their cup star.
