Bold Trade Idea sends Skinner out for a big extension

While the future of Connor McDavid looms about everything the Edmonton Oilers do, another decision quietly comes closer to the spotlight: the future of starting goalkeeper Stuart Skinner. Eligible to sign an extension now and for a deal that would kick the next summer, the 26-year-old is just in the middle of a debate that could form the long-term trajectory of the oilers.

On the one hand, Skinner Edmonton stopped back-to-back Stanley Cup performances on the back-to-back. He is not a Vezina, but he has shown that he can win behind a strong selection. His current cap hit of $ 2.6 million is one of the better values of the competition, and a short-term extension in the $ 5 million can keep him affordable, while the oilers is a pity with huge contracts for McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Evan Bouchard. Early Expand also bears potential advantage: if Skinner finds consistency among the new goalkeeper coach Peter Aubry, Edmonton would have a starting keeper who is locked under the market value.

But a growing number of fans – and some analysts – are not convinced.

Stuart Skinner Edmonton Oilers Shutout

The criticism is often honest: Skinner does not steal games, and his inconsistency has played a role in two failed cup final runs. Its .896 save percentage last season, combined with shaky play -off stretches, feeds the argument that the oilers may never get over the bump with him. And to be brutal, the oilers must come over the bump. A third failed attempt to do this would justify an in -depth grid changes.

Is an exchange or a signature more logical for Skinner?

That evokes a daring opportunity: now exchange Skinner, before Edmonton makes a lot of money to him. His contract is still manageable and his age keeps his commercial value intact. For a team with a shortage of assets, Skinner can be reversed elsewhere for help – a proven goalkeeper or extra depth on the blue line.

Allan Mitchell of athletics wrote this week:

“The chances that Edmonton only uses these two men (Skinner and Calvin Pickard) the entire season, including the play-offs, deployment, should be considered a long recording … Fans must expect that a Stanley Cup will be supplied with Skinner-Pickard or a complete revision in the goal in the next year. Possibly faster.”

The action or signing of the Skinner is a gamble, no doubt. If you sign him and he does not improve, the oilers have committed themselves to someone who is not the solution. On the other hand, Skinner would continue that Edmonton Klautert to stabilize the fold, and there is no guarantee that a better option is available.

It is daring to trade him this season, unless a clear upgrade shows itself on the trade market. To be honest, it can be reckless.

Ultimately, the choice comes down to this: lock Skinner at a reasonable price and hope that he is growing in the role, or makes a daring step to upgrade now before you commit in the long term. Both paths bear risks – and the oilers have not left much margin in their cup star.
