BMW finally shrinks his kidney grilles – but not on a road car

After the 2015 debut of the 3.0 CSL Hommage R -concept, the Kidney grilles of BMW have grown steadily. Some of the smaller sedans still have fairly modest kidneys, certainly, but for the most part BMW has embraced huge gratings, especially on vehicles such as the IX, 4 -series and 7 series. A new BMW is delivering the trend, but unfortunately for haters with large kidney, it is one that you cannot buy.

BMW is for the racing season of 2026 shrinking The kidney grilles – believe it or not – on its M Hybrid V8 LMDH racing car in search of better aerodynamic performance. This, in combination with a new splitter, will help the M Hybrid V8 to perform more consistently on different types of traces and improve cooling efficiency. The kidney grilles will still light up around the circumference, so the M Hybrid V8 will still be very recognizable.

BMW’s M Hybrid V8 has participated since 2023 in the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship and the World Endurance Championship since 2024. The record was spotty, with a handful of victories in IMSA, but only a few 2nd places in WEC and disappointing results in the 24 -hour le man.

The Italian company Dallara offers the chassis for the M Hybrid V8, while BMW offers a customized Racing V-8 engine. This fits with the spec LMDH hybrid system, which consists of an engine and electronics from Bosch, transmission from Xtrac and battery from Fortescue Zero. It competes with other LMDH cars from Acura, Alpine, Cadillac and Porsche, and Le Mans Hypercars from people such as Ferrari and Toyota.

Next year BMW will split with its long-term American motorsport partner Rahal Letterman Lanigan (RLL) Racing and our colleagues at Motorsport.com Report that Europe’s WRT racing can perform the M Hybrid V8 in America. The car has shown promising and the #24 is currently 3rd in the IMSA classification, but BMW wants more. Especially at Le Mans, where the best finish is a low 16th.

So maybe the kidney BMW will reduce something good. We will see what is happening, the Rolex 24 in Daytona in January.
