Blue Jays and Mark Shapiro agree to contract talks during postseason run: ‘We’ll probably come to something soon’
On Thursday, President and CEO Mark Shapiro addressed the media at the club’s end-of-season press conference at Rogers Centre, where he discussed several topics, including his expiring contract status.
Shapiro entered the final year of a five-year extension this season, which is expected to expire in January 2026, which opened up the possibility for his potential departure if the ’25 season went poorly. But amid the franchise’s improbable run to the World Series, both sides expressed mutual interest in extending his tenure, though they paused those negotiations until the postseason concluded.
Now that the offseason is here, it likely won’t be long before the organization’s POBO is extended with a multi-year extension, admitting, “We’ll probably work something out soon.”
Mark Shapiro says discussions about his contract status have been put on hold during the postseason, but he reiterated previous comments that “there’s a desire for me to stay here and a desire for (ownership) to keep me here” and added, “I think we’ll probably work something out soon.”
Shapiro joined the Blue Jays organization midway through the 2015 season, replacing former team president and CEO Paul Beeston, who previously served in that role since 1991 and had been an employee since the franchise’s inception in ’76 – a year before the inaugural campaign.
Much of the attention has also been on Atkins, whose contract expires after next season. When asked about his status, the Blue Jays GM declined to speak about his future with the franchise.
But assuming an extension is on the way for Shapiro, there’s a good chance an extension is on the way for Atkins soon as well.
