In the course of the NBA outside season, the New Orleans -Pelikans have had to deal with intense criticism from numerous members of the NBA media. No one launched a bigger attack on the Pelicans than Bill Simmons previously this summer did with his comments about the team that was moved from New Orleans. Simmons stated that he had the feeling that there was a lack of fan base and that the Pelicans would not really be missed if they left the Big Easy.
Despite this lack of respect from an experienced journalist such as Simmons, he may have just been back in the good graces of fans with comments he made about Trey Murphy III.
In a recent episode of the Zach Lowe Show, Lowe Simmons raised to talk about predictions for the Olympic basketball team of 2028 USA. During this segment, Simmons had his considerable part of Bold Takes, no more daring than his guarantee that the current Charlotte Hornets Rookie could be Knueppel in the team.
Outside his daring Takes and crazy predictions, a player Simmons came up with Pelicans Wing Trey Murphy III. He has the feeling that, despite the fact that Murphy is really good, heaven is the limit for him.
“I bet on the advantage,” Simmons said. “I think he will continue to improve year after year. I think he is one of the most underrated assets in the competition.”
Simmons continued to compare his potential impact for Team USA with that of always big ones. “I just think that’s the kind of man you need,” he said. “He is almost in the Carmelo (Anthony), (Kevin) Durant-Rol, just start firing 25-legs and you will change the defense.”
Of course Simmons could not leave Murphy noticing without throwing some shade at the pelicans, saying that Murphy is “the stupidest situation”. But to be honest, let’s not concentrate on that; Instead, let’s concentrate on the much praise that one of the sports of New Orleans has received clear young stars.
What could Murphy Team USA mean for the Pelicans?
It is clear that 2028 is still a way, and we know how quickly the NBA can change, with a free agency and with how crazy the trade market will be. That said, assuming that Murphy, who is under contract until 2029, stays in New Orleans and makes Team USA, this probably means that the pelicans are one of the largest contenders in the Western Conference.
Trey’s averages of 21.2 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.5 assists per match are good, but may not be good enough to make an Olympic team. A step up to 24-25 points per game could, however, do that and the prediction of Simmons comes out. That type of step would also create a 1a/1B situation between Zion Williamson and Murphy, giving the pelicans one of the best duos in the competition.
We already know that the core of Murphy, Williamson, Herb Jones, Derik Queen and Jeremiah Fears will be special for the coming years. But if the prediction of Simmons van Murphy that team USA comes true, the ceiling of this group only gets higher.
