Beto’s late goal saves the day

Beto’s late goal saves the day

4 minutes, 40 seconds Read

Beto scored with virtually the last kick of the match to help Everton to a 1-1 draw against Brighton at the Amex Stadium.

Everton had to start with four centre-halves in a back four, with Jarrad Branthwaite replacing Vitalii Mykolenko at left-back. The Ukraine international appears to have taken a blow ahead of the match.

After a lukewarm first half, as has been the case in recent games, the Toffees came on stronger in the second half. However, they got the win against the run of play when the returning Pascal Gross put his side ahead after a number of attempts for the visitors went in vain.

However, Beto came up big in the final minute, converting from close range to secure an unlikely draw. With a point here, the Blues can temporarily climb to eighth in the standings before tomorrow’s matches.

Here are the player ratings from Everton’s 1-1 draw against Brighton:

Jordan Pickford: 6

Jordan Pickford had to react quickly to Danny Welbeck’s improvised shot early in the match, but he could do nothing about Pascal Gross’ close finish for the opening goal.

Jake O’Brien: 6

O’Brien was moved to right-back to accommodate the returning Michael Keane in the center of defence. He had his hands full with Kaoru Mitoma’s deception and could have done better by covering Gross for the Brighton goal.

However, the Scotland international certainly played a role in securing the point, with his low drive coming off the keeper before being turned in by Beto.

James Tarkowski: 6

Tarkowski was unlucky to have his header at the back post cleared into a goal mouth. He led the backline well, but failed to suppress Ayari’s pass, which fell to Gross.

Michael Keane: 5

Keane returned to the line-up after a three-match suspension and could have done a better job of avoiding Ayari’s pass in the penalty area. He did not go to the ball with full conviction, which led to Brighton’s opener against the run of play. He also had a shot saved by Verbruggen in the closing minutes of the match.

Jarrad Branthwaite (replaced by Patterson at 89′): 6

Shortly after returning from a long-term injury, Branthwaite played almost the entire 90 minutes and out of position after a knockout against Vitalii Mykolenko. He used his height and physicality well, but it is quite clear that the left-back role is not the best use of his talents.

James Garner: 6

Garner delivered the ball into the penalty area, which led to Beto’s equalizer in the final minutes. He also delivered a fantastic backpost throw from the corner, which was met by Tarkowski before being cleared. Had a solid but unspectacular match in the middle of the park.

Idrissa Gueye (replaced by Iroegbunam at 80′): 5

Not one of his best games in an Everton shirt. Things haven’t really clicked in midfield since Gueye returned from AFCON, with Garner’s partnership with Iroegbunam looking more solid. It probably also has a lot to do with fatigue and at 36 years old, Gueye is no spring chicken and could use some time to reset.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (replaced by Alcaraz at 80′): 5

Dewsbury-Hall had two big chances in the second half to give his team the lead. The first chance was a clever shrug to beat his man before taking a long and hopeful shot from a tight angle. However, the second should have been surrendered when Dewsbury-Hall found the goalkeeper after being set up for a tap-in by Barry.

Harrison Armstrong (replaced by Dibling at 80′): 5.5

The teenager had a difficult task: playing out of position on the right flank. Although he showed some creative touches and nice combination plays, he also suffered many errors and was unable to build sustainable momentum.

Thierno Barry (replaced by Beto at 89′): 5.5

After scoring four goals in the last five league games, Barry couldn’t really create a good opening. His best moment today was setting up Dewsbury-Hall for a tap-in, but the playmaker failed to find the corner of the net.

Ndiaye’s education: 5

A rare anomalous play for the Senegalese magician who failed to come up with good openings from the left. He also showed signs of fatigue.

Replacements

Charly Alcaraz: 7

Played his part in the equalizer with a brilliant pass from deep and found Garner on the right.

Iroegbunam team: 5

Gave the ball away a few times in dangerous areas

Tyler Dibling: 5

Couldn’t affect the game too much.

Bet: 8

It was a tumultuous week for Beto, with constant connections away from Merseyside, but he came on late in the match to secure an important point for his side. Reacted quickly to Verburggen’s save on O’Brien, sending the stands into an uproar.

Nathan Patterson: 7

Looked good in the closing minutes, with an important push towards the end.

It wasn’t exactly an elegant performance, but a point away is a point away, and I’d say these assessments are about right.
