The PGA of America is still a week away from organizing the first Ryder Cup in the history of Bethpage, but both parties have already registered for more.
On Wednesday morning, the New York governor Kathy Hochul and the PGA of America announced that the state of New York would organize two extra PGA championships in the 1920s, in 2033 in Bethpage Black and in 2035 in Oak Hill. The decision brings the PGA championship back to Bethpage for the second time in recent history and continues a relationship between the administrative body and the Stewards of New York’s most famous municipal golf course. As part of the agreement, Bethpage also organizes the PGA championship of 2028 KPMG Ladies.
“The Black Baan tested the strongest field in Golf in 2019 and delivered a memorable PGA championship and promises to do this again in 2033,” said Don Rea, the PGA of America president in a release. “These three championships will contribute to the extensive history of our association in the state of New York, and we can’t wait to see the best players in the world compete on Long Island and in Rochester.”
The news is a bit a bit whispering about the future of Bethpage Black as a large championship location, which did not have a big time golf event on the calendar after next week’s Ryder Cup. Bethpage’s Black Course, a depression era AW Tillinghast design with a praised history as a publicly accessible large large championship brutal, has earned compliments of Golf Diehards as an important host, but has somewhere in the empire existing between “US Open Test” and “PGA Championship Mainstay.”
The course has organized a PGA championship and two US OpenS since the turn of the century, and next week will organize its very first Ryder Cup. Those tournaments are generally praised as successes, with the municipal roots of Bethpage that form the stage for packaged crowd of Rabid New Yorkers and the proximity of the city that open the checkbooks for large business hospitality and sponsorbuildouts.
The black course presents a few layers by profession to an administrative body such as the PGA of America. Firstly, the PGA generates larger income from tournaments in large metropolitan areas, where it can attract more substantial hospitality options. For another, the roots of Bethpage such as the so-called “People’s Country Club” do not pass a shortage of ticket demand under the New York Faithful-as is apparent from the PGA of America’s very criticized decision to request a registration price of $ 750 for the Ryder Cup.
The PGA of America’s decision brings a large championship to four locations in New York in the following decade, where Oak Hill and Bethpage serve alongside US Open Hosts Winged Foot and Shinnecock Hills.
For Bethpage, the decision adds fuel to two years of excitement that leads to next week’s Ryder Cup, where the “People’s Country Club” will again count the very best in the world among its guests.
