Bernardo Silva risks suspension ahead of the crucial title battle between Man City and Arsenal

Bernardo Silva risks suspension ahead of the crucial title battle between Man City and Arsenal

Manchester City could be without one of their most influential players when they take on Arsenal in what could be the decisive match of the Premier League title race.

Bernardo Silva has collected eight yellow cards this season, including one in City’s narrow win over Newcastle, leaving him dangerously close to a two-match ban.

Under Premier League rules, any player who makes ten bookings before his club has played 32 league matches must automatically serve a two-match ban.

City have now played 28 games, meaning Silva will have to get through the next four league games without receiving two more warnings.

Important matches of Manchester City before the Arsenal Clash

City’s upcoming league matches – against Leeds, Nottingham Forest, West Ham and Chelsea – will take them to the 32-match threshold. Only then will Silva’s yellow card count be reset.

The timing couldn’t be more delicate. Immediately after those four games, City host Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium in a match that could lift the title race.

Should Silva receive two more bookings before the reset, he would be ruled out of the clash against Mikel Arteta’s side.

Given Silva’s importance to Pep Guardiola’s system – both creatively and defensively – his absence would be a major blow.

Man City Cup competitions are not affected

Good news for City is that yellow cards in the Premier League do not apply to domestic cup competitions.

Silva’s disciplinary situation will not affect his availability for the Carabao Cup final or the FA Cup match against Newcastle. That’s good news for City, especially with Marc Guehi ruled out of the Carabao Cup final.

In theory, Silva could even secure bookings against Leeds and Forest, serve his suspension against West Ham and Chelsea and return with a clean slate for the Arsenal game. But Guardiola will hope it doesn’t come to that.

A title race in the Premier League, balanced on discipline

As Arsenal continue to apply pressure at the top of the table, every detail matters, and Silva’s discipline could prove to be a decisive subplot.

City now face the challenge of getting one of their most important players through a tough run of games, without losing him for the biggest of them all.
