The right back did not have a happy reunion with his old club on Tuesday evening when Arne Slot’s men won 1-0 in the UEFA Champions League.
Thibaut Courtois made a series of excellent saves to keep the Reds out for the first hour of the match, but could not keep out Alexis Mac Allister’s bullet header.
Alonso admitted afterwards that Real didn’t have as many attempts on goal as they thought, which shows how well Liverpool’s defense performed on the night.
“It was a very tight, tight game,” he told Amazon Prime. “The momentum gave them the lead and after we tried it was always going to be an intense game.
“Unfortunately we couldn’t get anything. We certainly tried, we reached the last line, but we didn’t create as many chances as expected.”
Bellingham and Alonso respond to Alexander-Arnold’s boos
When Alexander-Arnold came off the bench late in the second half, he received a frosty reception from the home crowd, who were still harboring bitter feelings over his free transfer to Madrid in the summer.
“It’s obviously one of those things in football,” Bellingham said. “The fans’ cheers are not a reflection of how they feel about him.
“I think it’s more to give their team an edge and get him off their backs a little bit. I’m sure they appreciate what he’s done for the club. It’s one of those things.”
On the boos Alexander-Arnold received, Alonso added: “Well, that was to be expected. He was focused and wanted to be part of it. So first time. He has challenges ahead of him – it’s a new experience. One step at a time, but we’re happy to have him.”
