In a movement that has shocked Indian cricket fans, the BCCI Rohit Sharma has removed as the ODI captain of India, just a few days before the three-competition series against Australia.

The decision, announced by main selector Ajit Agarkar, has caused a massive return of supporters, who call it nothing less than a ‘betrayal’ of one of the greatest leaders in India.

Shubman Gill has been named the new ODI captain, while Shreyas Iyer will serve as his deputy. The decision even comes when Rohit India led to the ICC Champions Trophy title earlier this year and the World Cup final last year.

During the press conference, Ajit Agarkar justified the decision and said that the selectors wanted to give Gill the time to settle in the role prior to the ODI World Cup 2027.

“We don’t have too many fifty-over games before the next World Cup. We thought it is the right time to transfer the captain to Shubman so that he can build his team and plan in the long term,” said Agarkar.

He also confirmed that he had spoken with Rohit before the announcement, but did not announce any details about their conversation and called it ‘personal’.

However, the explanation did not go well with fans. The cricket community burst on X (formerly Twitter), which closed Agoarar and the selection panel for what many are called “lack of respect” towards Rohit Sharma.
