BCCI instructs KKR to release Mustafizur Rahman
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the governing body has asked KKR to make the move for the Bangladesh international and also assured the franchise that it can sign a replacement. The board’s stand will ensure that KKR are not left with any shortages as they prepare their squad for IPL 2026, even though the release was not motivated by cricketing reasons.
According to Saikia, the direction was issued after assessing the prevailing situation, with the BCCI looking to take decisive action to avoid further complications. Although the board has not publicly set a deadline, KKR is expected to complete the formalities soon and start the process of identifying an alternative foreign player.
“Due to the recent developments going on everywhere, BCCI has directed the franchisee KKR to release one of their players Mustafizur Rahman of Bangladesh from their squad and BCCI has also said that if they ask for replacement, BCCI will allow the replacement.” said Saikia as quoted by ANI.
High-profile auction purchase leads to discussion
Mustafizur was one of KKR’s key acquisitions at the IPL mini-auction in Abu Dhabi where the franchise fetched him for INR 9.20 crore after a competitive bidding war with Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The pacer’s international experience and reputation for deceptive cutters made him an attractive option for the defending champions, especially for matches on slower surfaces.
However, the signing soon became a talking point beyond just cricket. In recent days, KKR and their ownership group, including co-owner, have participated Shah Rukh Khanreceived criticism from sections of fans on social media. The backlash centered on the timing of the move, given the tense atmosphere surrounding India-Bangladesh relations, and eventually caught the attention of the BCCI.

No clarity yet on India’s tour of Bangladesh
With Mustafizur set to leave, KKR’s think tank will reassess the overseas combination. The franchise will likely look for a fast bowler who can offer similar skills (variety at the death and experience in high-stress situations) while fitting seamlessly into the team’s broader plans for the season.
The BCCI’s assurance on allowing substitution gives KKR flexibility whether they dip into the unsold stock or explore other available options. From the league’s perspective, this move reinforces the board’s intention to keep the IPL insulated from off-field turbulence as much as possible.
Interestingly, the BCCI is silent on India’s planned white-ball tour of Bangladesh later this year. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) recently announced that India will play three ODIs and three T20Is in September 2026, with the squad expected to arrive in Dhaka on August 28. The series had previously been postponed due to unrest in the country.
