Bayer Leverkusen 3-1 Eintracht Frankfurt: Hjulmand is starting to rule with Bundesliga Win – Soccer News

Kasper Hjulmand made a winning start as the head coach of Bayer Leverkusen after a 3-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt.

A brace from Alejandro Grimaldo and a Patrik Schick -Penalty helped to hold Leverkusen for all three points in the Bayarena after red cards for Robert Andrich and Ezequize Fernandez again on both sides of Can Uzun’s strike for visitors.

Grimaldo opened the score after just 10 minutes with a brilliant free kick of almost 25 meters. He curled the ball over the wall before his strike ricochde in a helpless Michael Zetterer in the goal of Frankfurt.

Leverkusen seemed to continue from that opening goal, with Nathan Tella, Jarell Quansah, Aleix Garcia and Loic Bade all the target before Schick eventually doubled their lead from the penalty spot in the first half extra time after Tella had been knocked down by Robin Koch.

However, Frankfurt made a fast start in the second half after the 19-year-old Uzun scored in the 51st minute. Leverkusen did not succeed in removing their lines from a corner and the bent volley of the midfielder could not be kept out by Mark Flekken.

Leverkusen was then forced into a nervy finish after Andrich received a second yellow card for a late challenge on Ritsu Doan just before the hourly marking, and NNAMDI Collins hit the woodwork less than a minute later.

But despite another red card, this time until the second half of replacement Fernandez, Grimaldo succeeded in taking his second of the game in the eighth minute of extra time to win the victory for Leverkusen.

Data Debrief: Schick chases Frankfurt again

Leverkusen’s first half of dominance eventually paid off, while gathering 2.05 expected goals from 18 shots, to Frankfurt’s 0.67 of 13 attempts and only two on goal.

Schick enjoys Frankfurt in the Bundesliga, now scores six times against them in the competition, his most against every opposition (also six against Freiburg and Hoffenheim).

Leverkusen has also made a winless run of five games in the competition, because Hjulmand will now try to help the 2024 champions build on this victory.
