Baseball Shorts: What’s the Connection Between Blue Rocks and a Moose?

In this episode of Baseball Shorts we focus on the moose logo of the Wilmington Blue Rocks. The club is named after blue granite found along the Brandywine River in Wilmington, but the club still has a moose as its (cap) logo.
How did the club get to this point? Read on and you will learn.

As early as the 1940s and 1950s, Wilmington had a minor league team called the Blue Rocks. When professional baseball returned to Delaware’s largest city, they honored baseball history and also adopted the name Blue Rocks. In the early years their logo did not cover the name, but in 2003 their main logo showed some bluish letters split by a pickaxe. The cap logo changed to a blue brick holding a baseball bat/pick and throwing a ball up (see photo at left).

The Blue Rocks continued to wear these logos until 2010, when they changed both the main logo and the cap logo. Just then the moose came around the corner.
The new look, developed by Brandiose, was unveiled in 2010 and was immediately well received.

Rumor has it that former owner Frank Bolton is responsible for the moose as a logo/mascot.
The story goes that Bolton had bad Chinese food and had some kind of vision. There’s a play called Rocky and Bullwinkle. Bolton came up with the idea because there is a moose in that piece. The link to Rocky was quickly made because of the club name and instead of Bullwinkle it became Bluewink: Rocky Bluewinkle.

Apparently the logo is still popular, as it hasn’t changed since 2010, save for some refinements.
