Barcelona recorded a thrilling victory over Real Madrid in the Supercopa de Espana on Sunday evening, winning the first trophy of the 2025/26 season.

It was Barca’s fourth trophy under Hansi Flick, after the LaLiga title, the Supercopa de España and victory in the Copa del Rey last season.

They have now won a record 16 Spanish Super Cups, three more than second-placed Los Blancos.

A historic clash between Barcelona and Real Madrid

Barcelona’s historic victory over Athletic Bilbao in the semi-final of the Spanish Super Cup meant they went into the final as favourites. That confidence was evident as the Blaugrana dominated the opening stages of the match.

After squandering a golden opportunity just minutes earlier, Raphinha fired Hansi Flick’s side ahead in the 36th minute. The Brazilian applied a clinical finish from the left side of the penalty area to send the ball into the bottom right corner.

In injury time of the first half, Real Madrid equalized with an outrageous solo goal from Vinicius Jr. It was the Brazilian’s first Real Madrid goal in 17 games for Los Blancos.

Vinicius and Madrid’s joy lasted only a few moments as Robert Lewandowski lobbed the ball past Courtois to make it 2-1 to the Catalans.

Real Madrid equalized again a few minutes later, against the run of play. Gonzalo Garcia poked the ball in from close range to make it 2-2 at King Abdullah Sports City.

It was the first time three goals were scored in first-half stoppage time in an El Clasico in the 21st century.

Raphinha gave Barcelona the last laugh as his ambitious strike took a deflection off Raul Asencio in the 73rd minute to beat Courtois. He is now only the second player, after Aritz Aduriz, to score four goals in a Super Cup campaign.

Real Madrid had two big chances to equalize at the death. However, both Alvaro Carreras and Asencio aimed their efforts straight at the goalkeeper.

Barcelona’s unprecedented final series against Real Madrid

Barcelona have now beaten Real Madrid in five of their last six meetings in all competitions. Los Blancos’ only win came in LaLiga earlier this season.

Barcelona have also defeated Madrid in three consecutive finals for the first time in history.

In January 2025, Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 5-2 in the final of the Spanish Super Cup. Later in April, the Catalans claimed a 3-2 victory over the club from the Spanish capital in the final of the Copa del Rey.

However, Real Madrid still leads Barcelona in their all-time finals head-to-head clash.

Sunday’s victory not only gave Barcelona a significant psychological boost for the rest of the season, but also allowed them to secure the record prize money for the 2026 Spanish Super Cup.

The additional income could help them immensely as they prepare to strengthen their squad in the summer.
