Bangladesh announces strange vice-captain appointments across formats ahead of T20 World Cup 2026

On Tuesday, November 18, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced a number of interesting vice-captain appointments across formats in the Bangladesh National Cricket Team.

These massive changes in the leadership of the Bangladesh National Cricket Team across formats come ahead of the all-important ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, which will be played in India and Sri Lanka.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Saif Hassan named Bangladesh vice-captains

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has decided to make some changes in the leadership group in T20I, ODI and Test teams. However, these changes do not take place in the captains department; instead, new vice-captains have been appointed.

Star all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz, star batsman Najmul Hossain Shanto and talented batsman Saif Hassan have been named vice-captains in Test, ODI and T20I cricket respectively.

These appointments are quite strange in nature as Najmul Hossain Shanto is the Test captain and he will have Mehidy Hasan Miraz as his deputy but in the ODI format, things will be completely opposite.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz has been appointed as ODI captain for one year, and he will have Najmul Hossain Shanto as his deputy, who will continue as Test skipper in the ongoing cycle of the ICC World Test Championship.

Talking about the T20I team, Litton Das is the skipper and will have star opening batsman Saif Hassan as his deputy. Interestingly, Saif Hassan has looked in hot form in T20I cricket ever since he got a place in the team.

Why was Saif Hassan given charge of T20I?

Saif Hassan has played just 18 matches for the Bangladesh National Cricket Team in T20I cricket but has impressed the selection committee with his stunning performances.

In those matches, he scored 396 runs at an average of 28.28 and a strike rate of 121.84, giving the Bangla Tigers a good start in most of the matches.

He will also get an opportunity to take over as full-time captain as Litton Das has been appointed as T20I skipper only until the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

“Saif Hassan’s elevation as vice-captain of the T20 team comes on the back of consistent and impressive performances in the shortest format for Bangladesh. Litton Kumer Das has been entrusted with leading the side until the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2026,” BCB said in a statement.

Abdur Razzak replaces Khaled Mashud as chairman of High Performance

Apart from the vice-captain appointments, BCB has made some changes in the format. They have appointed Rubaba Daula as chairman of the Women’s Wing, and she has succeeded Abdur Razzak Raz, who will continue to contribute to the department in the role of vice-chairman, Cricbuzz reported.

Abdur Razzak will also be appointed as chairman of High Performance, replacing Khaled Mashud, who will become site chairman when he succeeds BCB president Aminul Islam.

Meanwhile, the BCB has decided to conduct gender sensitivity training at the National Cricket Academy premises at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Wednesday following Jahanara Alam’s shocking allegations.
