I will not use the dreaded words – the yips – because that is a completely lost confidence with the flat stick. We can still struggle with poor contact with our putter without losing trust. Often it is something that we suddenly do or do not do with our putter stroke that causes poor contact and more missed puts. It happens to me from time to time and I have found a way to solve this challenge is short order. It is not difficult and everyone can do it; But it requires a little focus.
In my case, usually when I make bad contact, I break my wrists during contact. This is not normally how I drew and occasionally this swing error crawls into my battle. It is as if I am trying to help the ball during short puts (less than 10 feet). I am always stunned by this sudden appearance of a breakdown in my well mechanics. It is very noticeable because my ball has no well from the putter face. There are different fixes that I have for this and a specific exercise that I use to ensure that I make solid contact with my putter.
At first you often heard me talk about ‘Back 6 Forward 12’. What this mantra does is to ensure that I accelerate through the ball when contacting. In short, it prevents me from taking my order, which means that poor contact will lead. I believe in this fundamental aspect of my next and it works really well for my game.
I concentrate all aspects of the specific placement of the touch that I need to take a good grasp. Here is an excerpt and earlier blog: “I compare the touch to a rhythm that I have when I am about everything that starts after my pre-shot routine. It starts with how the club feels in my hands, locking my wrists and shoulders and the movement of the club head. There is a kind of balance that I feel when everything goes well from the start and the finish of my well stroke. I am not struggling with any part of my process.‘
“I am not sure if I describe my rhythm well. Everything about my well process feels synchronous. Nothing is out of time. When this happens (and it often happens) my well is what I consider as solid and reliable. There is a stream towards my actions and they all work together to produce a confidence to produce trust when my touch is present.”
Finally, I use the following three exercises. The first is one of the most important for my game because I force myself to hit the ball in the middle of the club face. That is one that I concentrate on today:
I enjoy using the ‘gate drill’ because it helps me to concentrate on most of my well challenges. It makes my putting stroke and forces me to concentrate on a solid contact in the middle of the putter face. As long as my wrists are not in the game, my batting produces solid contact every time.
Making solid contact with our putter, regardless of the distance, will lower our golf scores. Because we use our putters about 40% of the time during a certain round, it is important to make a great stroke. We all have to work on solid contact and my use of the Tee/Gate exercise, I think you are well on your way to a great putter.
I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
