Keegan Bradley says he felt stupid. While he would be the one who did the honor, Bradley thought he had Be the one who is rewarded more.
But he still had to tell Larry Nelson that he wanted him to be his team’s ambassador.
“It’s really nice for us to see the boys around him and to have his knowledge and only his presence,” said Bradley.
“He is a man we all look up and really look forward to taking him to Bethpage.”
There, from next Friday, Bradley will request the US Ryder Cup team against Europe, and the Nelson appointment works in a few ways. Although he had gone 9-3-1 over three Ryder Cup performances and won three major championships, Nelson was never called a Kapitein captain, so Bradley’s Move gives him some recognition.
But there is also his game; Nelson’s Ryder Cup record also includes a 4-1-0 mark against European legend Seve Ballesteros. Bradley said that he also appreciated Nelson’s military service during the war in Vietnam, and the idea of the ambassador was hatched in May from the Champions dinner of the PGA Championship.
“I think Larry Nelson is one of the best people I have ever met in my life,” said Bradley last week at the ProCore Championship, where 10 of the dozens of American Ryder -Cuppers played as a preparatory for Bethpage.
“… hearing the stories of him and Lanny Wadkins and hear about this old Ryder -cups and just knowing about his service on the country and his incredible Ryder Cup record, and then to finish what is a great person, it is more an asset to us. What an incredible one has been beating, nobody has ever beaten.
“It’s really an honor for us to have him. Sometimes I feel stupid in this role of inviting Larry Nelson to do this when he is just this great golfer, but a better person, a bigger role in our Ryder Cup history, and it’s really nice for us to see the boys around him and to have his knowledge and just his presence.”
The news came, said Bradley, last month during the Tour Tour Championship in Atlanta, where Nelson lives. He was asked to do some interviews with the PGA of America, but Bradley said that was a set -up to surprise Nelson with the appointment.
“I really feel that it is our duty to honor people like him, to honor great Americans in our Ryder Cup team,” said Bradley. “If you have a man he alone is one of the best Ryder Cup players ever, but then you have his service in Vietnam and what he has done for our country, it is really amazing, it is really an incredible story.

“I also find it so stupid how I could be Ryder Cup captain and he couldn’t, he wasn’t. He would never say that. I felt that it was our duty to honor him and what he did for us.”
During an interview last week With Golf Channel ‘Golf Today’, Nelson said he was honored. He is also looking forward to it.
“Great, humiliated,” Nelson said on “Golf today.” “I really appreciated what Keegan said. It is one of those things, I didn’t know much about Keegan – I know he won the PGA on the same thing
Golf course as I did, knew a bit about his history that his father was a professional. It’s great for me, and I have told many people, you look in the eyes of people, you can sometimes see their hearts. He is a great competitor. And I just feel like the American team, the US, the PGA is lucky to have him as a captain this year.
“It will be difficult. It will be a tough week. Both two good teams, and we needed a good leader, and I think he will be the one who will be able to motivate the boys. I just appreciate the chance to go there and watch.”
