Severe heatwave warnings have been issued for large parts of the country, with temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius expected in at least four states in the coming days.
Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) senior meteorologist Dean Narramore told SBS News: “[It’s] one of the biggest heatwaves we’ve seen in southeastern Australia for some time.”
The combination of a slow-moving trough system through South Australia and a blocking high in the Tasman Sea is bringing all the heat from the north and west of the country to the southeast.
BoM has issued severe heatwave warnings for parts of NSW, Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT, which will remain in force until Wednesday.

“We will see several days of temperatures six to 16 degrees above average in the southeastern parts of the country,” Narramore said.

“And that translates to temperatures in the high 30s to low 40s for our coastal areas and in the low to mid 40s in the southeastern parts of the country, with some locations likely to see temperatures rise into the high 40s,” Narramore said.

The BoM has warned of the potential impact of the heat on older Australians, babies, children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, people with medical conditions and those who are unwell.

Temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius in four states

BoM is predicting temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius in NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia early this week.
In NSW, the severe to extreme heatwave will spread and peak by mid-week, with maximum temperatures reaching the high 30s to mid 40s.

On the east coast, warnings cover the South Coast, Snowy Mountains and South West Slopes in NSW; North East and East Gippsland in Victoria; North East, East Coast and Midlands in Tasmania; parts of South Australia, including the West Coast, Lower Eyre Peninsula and North West Pastoral and the ACT.

Highs are forecast for Victoria in the low to mid 40s. From Thursday, maximum temperatures are expected to be around 30 degrees in the south and up to the mid-40s in the north of the state.
The forecast for Victoria shows the maximum temperature in Mildura will change between 44 and 46 degrees Celsius between Wednesday and Friday.

Highs in South Australia will be in the high 30s and mid 40s, with the heatwave expected to peak mid to late next week. Temperatures are expected to rise to 41 degrees Celsius in Adelaide on Wednesday.

On the west coast, the Kimberley, Pilbara, Gascoyne, Goldfields, Eucla, Northern Interior, Southern Interior and Central Wheat Belt in Western Australia are facing heatwave warnings.
Western Australia could see even warmer days, with the BoM predicting temperatures in the 40s in parts of the state’s north-west.
