It is ironic that Norrie has been the man to carry the flag in fourteen Grand Slams over the past five years.
He was born in South Africa, raised in New Zealand, changed allegiances at 16 and then entered the American university system.
There’s no doubt that Norrie, a grinder with limited weapons, has maximized his talents admirably.
Few would have predicted that he would become a Wimbledon semi-finalist in 2022 and therefore reach the top 10 in the world.
This leads to the argument that Norrie possesses a mentality that some of his British colleagues would lack.
There is one obvious name that did not lack the minerals. Andy Murray has long been the epicenter of British tennis.
In the wake of the three-time major champion’s retirement almost a year and a half ago, there was reason for optimism.
Strong performances from Britain’s next generation at the 2024 US Open provided a feel-good factor for those worried about how the void could be filled.
Then Draper had just reached the Flushing Meadows semi-finals. Raducanu made good progress in her first season back from wrist surgery.
Now Draper has missed the Australian Open after playing one match in six months as questions about his physical durability continue to linger.
Raducanu just suffered one of the most demoralizing Grand Slam defeats of her career, mitigated by an offseason foot injury, and seemingly more introspection about where she’s headed.
Speaking about Britain’s lack of wins in Melbourne, Norrie told BBC Sport: “It was a bit of a shame but I think we all have to stay patient – there are some good players coming through.
“There are so many great coaches and there’s no reason why there shouldn’t be more [players] in the top 100. I think there comes a point when it all clicks.”
Great Britain had a record nine men and two women in this year’s Australian Open qualifying draw.
There continues to be excitement in British tennis circles about the potential of teenagers Mika Stojsavljevic, Hannah Klugman and Mimi Xu.
“I like to look at the top 200 song,” Kiernan said. “That’s where the real judgment should be: how many players in the country do we get for Grand Slam qualifying or the main draws?
“If you consistently get nine to thirteen players in those positions, then the assembly line is there.”
