Australian Open 2026: Aryna Sabalenka ’emotionally all over the place’ but battles past Anastasia Potapova

World number one Aryna Sabalenka said she was “emotionally confused all over” as she pushed past Anastasia Potapova to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open.

The Belarusian, a big favorite for a title she has already won twice, was riding a set to lead 4-0.

However, the 27-year-old felt ‘disconnected from my body’ as Potapova fought back in 55th place, with Sabalenka having to fend off four set points before completing a 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (9-7) win.

Afterwards, a reflective Sabalenka admitted it was a match she would have lost earlier in her career.

Sabalenka lost two Grand Slam finals last year, first to Madison Keys in Melbourne before making 70 unforced errors in the French Open showpiece against Coco Gauff.

She says she can ‘lose’ control of her emotions when tennis’ biggest prizes are on the line, and has previously worked with a psychologist to improve that aspect of her game.

She has reached at least the semifinals at 13 of the past 16 Grand Slam tournaments she has competed in, winning four majors in the past three seasons and establishing herself as the dominant player in the women’s game.

“Aryna would concentrate too much on how she feels five years ago and completely lose these matches,” Sabalenka said.

“I learned that it doesn’t really matter how you feel, it’s all about your mentality, your mental strength to be there, do your best, return the ball ugly with terrible technique and completely disconnect your body.

“When you see things aren’t working, fighting is the only tactic you have.”
