Australia is one of the 21 countries that have signed a joint statement that calls the approval of Israel of a large settlement project on the West Bank “unacceptable” and a “violation of international law”.
Palestinians and law groups say that the plan would effectively cut the hope of a future Palestinian state by effectively cutting the West Bank in two separate parts.

The plan has been convicted on a large scale as an infringement of international law that threatens a solution with two states, and Smotrich himself said that it would “buried” the idea of a Palestinian state in announcing last week.

‘Unacceptable and a violation of international law’

The joint statement was signed by Minister of Foreign Affairs Penny Wong and her counterparts from 20 countries: Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Latouwen, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
The ministers said that the decision of the Israeli higher planning committee to properly inspect plans for the construction of the settlement structure in the E1 area is “unacceptable and a violation of international law”.

“We condemn this decision and ask for his immediate reversal in the strongest conditions,” is the statement.

The ministers said that Smotrich’s claim that the plan will make a two -state solution impossible by distributing a Palestinian state and limiting the Palestinian access to Jerusalem, “no benefits for the Israeli people”.
“Instead, it threatens to undermine safety and feeds further violence and instability, so that we are farther away from peace.”

The ministers said that Israel’s government still has the opportunity to prevent the plan from continuing and encouraging the decision “urgently”.

“Unilateral action by the Israeli government undermines our collective desire for safety and prosperity in the middle,” they said.

“The Israeli government must stop the construction of the settlements in accordance with the Onsc resolution 2334 and remove their restrictions on the finances of the Palestinian authority.”

What is the E1 settlement plan?

The plan tries to build around 3,400 houses on the ultra-sensitive country, which lies between Jerusalem and the Israeli settlement of Magege Adumim.

The development in E1 has been taken into consideration for more than two decades, but was frozen during earlier governments by pressure from the United States.

All settlements of Israel on the West Bank, occupied since 1967, are considered illegal under international law, regardless of whether they have the Israeli building permit.
The Palestinian authority has criticized the decision, together with the United Nations.

Philippe Lazzarini, the head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, said that the project “would completely cut off the northern and central West Bank from the southern western Jordoever – which means that there would be no territorial contiguity anymore”.

‘Immediate independent foreign media access’

At night, Australia also joined 26 other countries in signing a statement that requires Israel international journalists access to Gaza and for the protection of journalists in the enclave.

The UK, New Zealand, France, Italy and Ukraine belong to the other countries that have signed the joint statement.

“In the light of the unfolding humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, the undersigned members of the Media Freedom Coalition, he urges Israel to allow immediate independent foreign media access and offer protection to journalists who are active in Gaza,” they said.
“Journalists and media employees play an essential role in placing the devastating reality of war. Access to conflict zones is of vital importance to effectively perform this role. We oppose all attempts to limit freedom of press and access to journalists during conflicts during conflicts.”
