While I was driving through Central Delaware last weekend, I went through some of the lateral side roads that passed through small villages on my way to the coastal resorts.
And then it was there.
It was a billboard with a familiar face on it. It was a former American Olympian with a smile of a mile wide and arms that stretch across the width of the billboard, big like life.
It was Hall-of-Fame Field Hockey player Carrie Lingo.
Lingo played for the United States in Beijing 2008, and was then captain of the American team, but ran a career-ending injury short before the United States qualified for the London 2012. She was one of the three major players who missed in the schedule for the Pan American Games in Guadalajara when the States Oversawrookra.
When she was healthy, Lingo was deadly and a real difference in midfield. She is part of the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame and the USA Field Hockey Hall of Fame.
So what does our hero do on a billboard along a well -traveled handling of her home? She works in the family business as a broker.
It is not every day that field hockey comes on a huge billboard. Jim Davis, who wrote about the sport for a quarter of a century The Trentonianwas placed on a billboard along one of the most important highways in the city, and his friends almost reported to ride the road when they recognized him.
And another time, along the Interstate 295 on the way north via South Jersey, there was a billboard that recognized the Widener University Field Hockey team. Widener plays their hockey only six or seven miles about the Commodore Barry Bridge from the 295 hat area, but when I gave me a start.
But not as big as seeing Carrie Lingo along the side of the road. It was a pleasant surprise.
