The sixth edition of the tournament, initially scheduled for December 2025, has been moved from July 8 to August 8. This shift was made to ready the venue ahead of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which Sri Lanka will co-host with India. The revised window also aligns with SLC’s international preferred calendar.
This marks the first return to the draft system since 2022, after the previous two seasons used the player auctions. According to an official press release from SLC, franchises can select both Sri Lankan and foreign players through the draft for the upcoming season.
Talks of introducing a sixth team had surfaced before the tournament’s postponement, but no further updates have emerged. And as in the previous editions, the competition is currently expected to feature five teams representing Colombo, Galle, Kandy, Dambulla and Jaffna.
Earlier this year, SLC terminated the agreement Jaffna Kings And Colombo attackers franchises for failure to fulfill contractual obligations. As things stand, the LPL has no franchise owners carrying on from before 2024, while new owners for the suspended teams, the Colombo and Jaffna teams, have yet to be announced.
LPL will be held at the same venues as T20 World Cup 2026
