When Meryl Thomas moved to Attwood in 1988, it was a practical choice.
She wanted her children to stay at the same school, and the quiet bag just past Gladstone Park kept them close.
But for almost four decades the move became so much more.
“I watch out every day and see the creek, the trees and the careers,” she said.
“We are not enclosed here, there is space, fresh air and nature in front of the door. Families grew up here, children have flown the nest, and now some of them even come back with their own families.”
“That is the secret, the feeling of continuity, of satisfaction. We all know each other, and that connection makes people continue to continue.”

Mrs Thomas said that the street had hardly changed in all that time.
“Almost every house still has the same families,” she said.
“I have seen the children grow up, I even learned some of them as a teacher, and now they are grown with their own families.
“Very few go further. It is an extraordinary stability in a world where things are constantly changing.”
She describes Attwood as the feeling of a village instead of a suburb, with his historic church from the 1830s, heritage buildings from the 1840s and 60s, and the local tavern where neighbors are still gather.
“It is really a village, and there are not many as it left in Melbourne. That heritage, that proximity, is precious,” said Mrs. Thomas.

Attwood has long been known as a hidden gem. Mrs Thomas remembers that it was almost a mystery for other Melburnians.
“We even had t-shirts 30 years ago and said,” Where is Atwood? ” Because nobody knew it!
“It is close to the airport, close to the city – I could be in the city in 15 minutes, but at the same time it is peaceful, with nature everywhere.”
Living under the flight path has never been a problem.
“Visitors come on the deck and say,” Oh my God, the planes are so close, “she said.
“But you can’t hear them from the inside. We are so used to not taking a message at all.”
Now that the preparation for a pension village in the neighborhood admits Mrs Thomas that the move is “emotional without words”.
“I did everything in this house myself, from the brickwork, the painting, the garden,” she said.
“It’s such a good street, so supportive. Just tonight, neighbors waved while we spoke. That says it all.
“Attwood gave me connection, stability and at home, and that will always stay with me.”
