At Wyndham, Cameron Young looks at an even larger price than the first PGA Tour winning

Cameron Young has an impressive lead in North Carolina. But he is in a state of mind of New York.

“I have many good memories that the New York State are open,” said Young. “And I am sure that a New York crowd would be, I hope to a certain extent by my side.”

It was late day on Saturday in Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, and Young was fresh from a third round 65 that expanded his lead in the Wyndham championship. With 18 more holes left, he was five shots for his nearest pursuer – and tried not to walk for himself.

That was hard to do, given everything at stake.

Young is not only looking for his first PGA Tour victory. He also fought to a place in a certain competition in September, one that comes to his home: the 2025 Ryder Cup in Bethpage Black on Long Island.

“I think that location is first of all one of my favorite golf courses in the world,” said Young.

Young, who grew up in Westchester County, where his father was the main professional at Sleepy Hollow Golf Club, also looked very comfortable at Sedgefield. That is not surprising. He played his collegial wave in Wake Forest, just 30 minutes away.

But the Ryder Cup at Bethpage is a natural subject for the indigenous New Yorker. It is also particularly resonant for Young, who was stabbed two years ago when the American Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson had not taken him as a captain Pick. Young, who was the ninth in Ryder Cup’s rankings, was the highest ranked player who was not selected for the 2023 team, who lost with a cute 16.5-11.5 margin for Europeans.

Young acknowledged to grow.

“It did pretty bad to miss it a few years ago,” he said. “I was ninth on the point list and was not picked, so I was a bit frustrated about that.”

Young said his intention was at the beginning of the 2025 season “to give our captain no choice.”

“I don’t know if I am in a pinning to do that or not, but it would really good golf between now and then,” he said. “But if I am in the question, that has been a big goal of mine and I would like to place myself there.”

First of all, that is Young trying to put the Wyndham away, a victory that would take him out of the Snide after seven career two and 23 top 10s.

Young is currently 19th in the Ryder Cup rankings. The top six players automatically qualify, with six Captain’s Picks that complete the team. A victory on Sunday would certainly attract the attention of our captain Keegan Bradley.

But Young said he doesn’t count on anything tomorrow or after that. At least that is the idea.

“I just try to look at that to just take all the little things that happen daily as it comes,” he said. “But in the back of my head I try to introduce myself in that team.”
