Sri Lanka registered their first victory of the Asia Cup 2025 after beating Bangladesh with six wickets in the fifth game of the tournament on Saturday. The skipper Charith Asalanka won the pitch and chose to first bowl, a decision that immediately paid off.
The tempo attack by Sri Lanka struck early, when Nuwan Thushara and Dushmantha Chameera delivered breakthroughs in their very first overs. Thushara rattled the stumps of Tanzid Hasan, while Chameera Parvez Hossain Emon fired, causing Bangladesh to return to the pavilion with both openers without scoring.
Litton Das tried to stabilize the innings and scored 28 before he fell to Wanindu Hasaranga. Towhid Hridoy was sustained by a sharp throw from Kamil Mishara, and Mahedi Hasan left cheaply shortly thereafter. Bangladesh looked deep into problems until Jaker Ali and Shamim Hossain had a strong recovery.
The couple compiled an unbeaten 86-run stand for the sixth Wicket on just 61 balls, which led Bangladesh to 139/5 in their assigned 20 overs. Ali remained undefeated at 41, while Shamim also contributed 42 in no time. Hasaranga was the choice of bowlers with two wickets, but a tight four -over spell was bent by Chameera, who produced the flow of runs from one end.
The Lankan lions chased a modest target of 140 and started a solid start. Pathum Nissanka And Kamil Mishara combined for a fluent 95-run partnership for the second Wicket in just 52 deliveries, because the victory had only become a formality. Nissanka hit a well -compiled 50 of 34 balls, while mishara anchored the chase with an unbeaten 46. Despite the losing a few wickets in the middle, the Lankanen achieved the target with a lot.
For the Litton Das-guided side, Mahedi Hasan was the striking bowler and ended with figures of 2/29 in his four overs. With this victory, the Lankans -led Lankans climbed to second place on the point table, while the Bangla Tigers slid to third place after their first defeat of the tournament.
Who said what?
Kamil mishara, player of the game
Pathum said to just play a normal game, take the time and do your things. Very happy to win another game for the country. I believe in my strengths and work hard for it.
Litton Das, Bangladesh (losing captain)
I thought we lost the game in PowerPlay. Wicket was pretty good to save. 170-180 would have been a different game. On a good wicket if you score 140, you have to bowling well and field fields. We didn’t do that. Doing or dying (against Afghanistan). Thanks to all our supporters. I wish they come again and watch our game.
Charith Asalanka, Sri Lanka (winning captain)
That was a dream start with two overs, two girls and two wickets. That is his most important weapon, the Googly (Hasaranga). Even we can’t choose him well. He is a superstar. As soon as we had received 120 runs, we realized that we had to finish it as quickly as possible. Brilliant support from the fans. Even Bangladesh fans too. Want to thank everyone who supported us.
