Shreyas Iyer has reported to the BCCI Center of Excellence in Bengaluru as he takes the next step in his comeback from a serious abdominal and spleen injury suffered in October.
The injury ruled him out midway through the ODI series against Australia and has kept him away from competitive cricket ever since. The Indian team management is now closely monitoring his recovery before making a call.
Iyer has already started light batting sessions in Mumbai and is showing no signs of discomfort. Recent scans and medical tests have also shown clear results, leaving medical staff satisfied with his progress.
Over the next four to six days, Iyer will undergo a full fitness assessment in Bengaluru. This includes endurance exercises, imaging tests, controlled net sessions and competition-style simulation work to check how his body responds.
A source following the process said, “Shreyas is looking very good. His recovery has been better than initially expected. He will have to undergo a few mandatory checks in the coming days.”
Despite the positive signs, his selection for the New Zealand ODI series remains uncertain. At this stage it is described as a 50-50 discussion, with the final decision expected only after all checks have been completed.
Another source explained the cautious approach and said there is no set return date yet. The focus is on ensuring Iyer can bat and train without pain before giving him the green signal.
The team management does not want to rush him back, especially given the nature of the injury. Approval will only come if he completes each activity without discomfort.
In Iyer’s absence, Ruturaj Gaikwad has taken over the fourth role for India in ODIs. He also continued to bat in the middle order for Maharashtra, adding weight to his case and retaining the spot.
