The usual annual New Year’s reception took place in the wake of the Boxing Day Test, which was held at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground. The test match ended within two days as England ended their three-game losing streak in the series.
Referring to that result, Albanese jokingly urged the two teams to do their best to at least take the Sydney Test to Day 3. He underlined the importance of the third day, which is celebrated as Jane McGrath Day. It raises awareness and funds for the McGrath Foundation, which helps families affected by breast cancer.
Legendary former Australian speedster Glenn McGrath is leading the initiative, which started after his wife Jane died following a battle with the dreaded disease.
“Day three of this test is really important. More than the others,” Albanese told the Sydney Morning Herald. “So whatever you do, if something goes wrong, get someone to play a few sessions because we want day three.”
Albanese later described the five-match series as “unlike any other” and believed the SCG would turn into a “sea of pink” if Australian fans and the Barmy Army jointly support the foundation’s work.

During the 90-minute reception, hosted by Albanese and his wife Jodie Haydon, players and officials from both countries enjoyed the seafood menu. Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg and chairman Mike Baird were also in attendance, while Glenn McGrath addressed the meeting on behalf of the foundation.
Australia retained the Ashes after winning the first three matches of the series. Although the Aussies have beaten England extensively in Test matches at home in recent years, the three wins in the ongoing series were a significant achievement as Josh Hazlewood was ruled out ahead of the series and regular captain Pat Cummins could only play the encounter in Adelaide.
