Arne Slot defended Ibrahima Konate after the Liverpool defender gave away a penalty that led to Leeds United’s comeback at Elland Road on Saturday evening.

Huge Ekitike gave the Reds two goals with a quick-fire brace shortly after half-time, but the Whites pulled one back in the 73rd minute.

Konate clumsily fouled Wilfred Gnonto in the penalty area and after referee Anthony Taylor pointed to the spot following a review on the pitch monitor, Dominic Calcvert-Lewin converted from twelve yards out.

Anton Stach equalized a few minutes later, but Dominik Szoboszlai gave Liverpool the lead again late on. However, Impact sub Ao Tanaka ensured Leeds took a huge point from the match when he scored from a corner in the 96th minute.

Slot admitted that the blame lies squarely with Liverpool for not closing out the match.

“It’s not the first time we’ve dropped points,” he told Sky Sports. “It’s not the first time we’ve conceded a goal in the last minute. It’s not the first time we’ve conceded a set-piece. I think everyone can understand what the mood was in the dressing room.”

“I don’t think we had a single chance until we were 2-0 up. The penalty wasn’t a chance, but we turned it into a chance because it led to a penalty, with another VAR intervention.”

“So 2-1, then maybe their first chance of the match led to 2-2. We showed the mentality to go 3-2 up. I think we were in control after that. Of course there is always the long ball, the second ball, which you can’t always make sure doesn’t happen.”

“And then after nine minutes of extra time there comes a set piece and they score. That’s part of our season. But the ones to blame are us. We concede these chances.”

Slot insisted Konate had made an honest mistake by giving away the penalty when the centre-back tried to block Gnonto’s cross in the penalty area.

“What you can say is that he tries to do everything he can to prevent a cross from coming. If you want to call it a mistake, then it is a mistake of hard work and trying.”

“There was contact, that’s for sure. He was already on his way to the floor, but we have to look at ourselves again.”
