Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has confirmed Andy Robertson as the new vice-captain of the club, where the Scotland International steps that Trent Alexander-Arnold has left after his summer movement to Real Madrid
The 30-year-old full-back, now in his ninth season in Anfield, will serve as a substitute for Captain Virgil van Dijk. Robertson has already established himself as a leader at international level, who carries the bracelet for Scotland, and Slot believes that his experience and influence make him the natural choice to take responsibility in Liverpool.
Speaking during his press conference on Friday said lock:
“It’s Robbo. He has played here for so many years, won the competition twice. It was Virgil, Trent, Robbo and Mo [Salah] last season. Trent left, so there are many logical reasons for it [the decision].
“He is a very good player, plays a lot of games, knows what is needed, knows the culture, but also knows the culture of the club and the dressing room.
“Apart from all the quality he shows on the field, he also plays a major role in the culture we have here at this club. That is, [as] I said many times last season, the biggest gift I could get from Jürgen [Klopp].
“That is also something that we should definitely keep for my successor, the same culture, if I ever leave this club.”
Robertson is a mainstay in the success of Liverpool since he joined Hull City in 2017. He played a key role in the Champions League triumph of the club in 2019 and their long-awaited Premier League title the following year. His consistency, working speed and leadership qualities have made him one of the most influential figures in the dressing room.
Slot underlined that the decision to name Robertson was not only about football capacity, but also about maintaining the strong culture that former manager Jürgen Klopp brought in to Anfield during his time.
“He has played here for so many years, has won the competition twice. He is a very good player, plays many games, knows what is needed, but also knows the culture of the club and the dressing room,” Slot explained.
Robertson’s rise to vice-captain of Liverpool is another milestone in what has been one of the most remarkable career trips in modern football. Released by Celtic as a teenager and part -time jobs work while playing for amateur Side Queen’s Park, he was once famous as “too small” to make it as a professional.
But after climbing the competitions with Dundee United and then moving to Hull City, Robertson’s ruthless work ethics and quality at Leftback attracted Liverpool’s attention. In the summer of 2017, Jürgen Klopp signed him for just £ 8 million a deal that is now considered one of the best bargains in the Premier League history.
Since then, Robertson has been central to the modern era of Liverpool. He was one of the most feared full-back pairs in Europe alongside Alexander-Arnold, which drove Klopp’s high intensity style. He lifted the Champions League in 2019, followed by the club’s first league title in 30 years in 2020, as well as the FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.
Now, after he took over the captain for Scotland in 2018, Robertson adds the vice-capincy of Liverpool to his leadership roles. His reputation as a vocal presence in the dressing room and his dedication to the values of the club made him Slett’s clear choice.
The appointment of Robertson ensures continuity within the leadership group in Liverpool, while officially stopping the role of Van Dijk’s right hand, both on and next to the field.
