After struggling in his last two starts following his return from a nerve injury, Stolarz posted perhaps his best start of the season by stopping 34 of 36 shots against. Not only did he show flashes of the great play from the 2024-2025 season, but his efforts also helped keep Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl off the scoresheet for the first time since December 14, 2021.

“Right now, points are scarce and we need every point we can get. Any time you can go out there and give the team a chance to win, make some big saves and do your job there. It felt nice to be able to do that,” Stolarz told reporters after the game. “Happy for all the boys, especially that power play that we can score two goals like that quite quickly. I know it’s a big part of our team. We have a lot of skills. So if we can limit the team’s chances a little bit and the goalkeepers can make some saves, we should come out on top more often than not.”

Stolarz believed that the Leafs could do a good job within the structure of their system while not letting the Oilers dictate the pace of the game. Considering they came in after playing a match with less than 24 hours of rest and their opponent was rested, this makes the brutal forecheck Stolarz pointed out that much more impressive.

It helps that the Leafs got a strong defensive performance from new shutdown pair Jake McCabe and Brandon Carlo.

“It was fantastic,” Stolarz said of their performance. “Brando came up and got into a fight, while Caber was playing against their top line. The way they were able to block shots, keep guys out and just stay physical, it’s tough. We played and traveled last night. So they definitely earned these next few weeks here.”

The win puts the Leafs on a three-game win streak and five points behind the Boston Bruins for the final Wild Card spot heading into the Olympic break. While all signs point to the team becoming sellers at the trade deadline, perhaps getting the next few weeks off will help them pick up the pace in the latter part of the season.

Stolarz may be just getting into trouble after all this time off, but he thinks the Olympic break will give him a chance to continue working his way back to full health.

“I’m going to continue training. I might go away for a few days, but I’ll be back here in Toronto pretty soon,” Stolarz said. “I’ve already had a little break, so maybe just go somewhere where the sun is shining and get back to work.”
