Amanda Anisimova sat in her chair with tears flowing over her face as Aryna Sabalenka Celebrated a big triumph in New York.
Less than two months ago, Anisimova passed a nightmare debut in a Grand Slam final and lost 6-0 6-0 to Iga Swiateek in Wimbledon. The script was different on Saturday evening in the US Open. She fought bravely against the world No. 1, but the experience and calmness of Sabalenka wore her to a 6-3 7-6 (3) victory. For Anisimova the pain was overwhelming, while she broke in tears in her chair.

“I didn’t fight hard enough for my dreams,” She then admitted.
“With the final I have a lot of nerves, and it is something I am trying to work on, but I wish I played more aggressively. I feel that if I fought harder, I might have given myself more chance.”
The 24-year-old has passed a long and uneven path so far. Preat as a future star since her junior days, when she defeated Coco Gauff to lift the US Open Girls’ Trophy 2017, her professional career is disturbed by injuries and a seven -month break in 2023 to prioritize her mental health. Even her way back to the Tour was Rocky: she lost qualification in Wimbledon in 2024 before she increased to two consecutive SLAM Finals in 2025 to two consecutive Slam -final.
Despite the heartache, Sabalenka believes that the story of Anisimova is still written.
“I know how much it hurts,” Sabalenka told her rival during the trophy ceremony. “But believe me, the moment you win the first, and you are going to win, you will enjoy it even more after the difficult losses.”
Those words have weight. The career of Sabalenka is not free from scars. Before she won her first SLAM on the Australian Open 2023, De Wit -Russia had lost three semi -finals and openly admitted that she would wonder if her chance would ever come. Since then she has become one of the brightest competitors of tennis, and her victory in New York delivered a fourth Grand Slam -Kroon, all the more important after the heartache in the finals of Melbourne and Paris this year.

For Anisimova, this defeat hurts more than most. Her collapse at Wimbledon was easier to rationalize – the nerves of a first final, the overwhelming opportunity. But this time she got closer, pushed harder and still left empty -handed.
Nevertheless, the fact that she has reached back-to-back Slam Finals shows a year after she has not qualified for Wimbledon, her resilience. As Sabalenka reminded her of it, all champions are forged by painful losses.
Anisimova’s tears On Saturday a story told about disappointment. But perhaps after a while they will be remembered as part of the battle that made her final breakthrough even sweeter.
