The top four seeds reached the women’s singles semifinals at the ITTF-Americas Cup in San Francisco. Up until that point, everything was going as expected, with top seed Bruna Takahashi of Brazil advancing without losing a match, and second seed Lily Zhang almost mirroring that success by winning 8 matches and losing only 1.
Fourth seed Amy Wang turned the script on its head. She fought to a 13-11 victory in the first game and took the lead early. Wang then dominated the second 11-3 to take a 2-0 lead. Takahashi had a great third game, winning 11-3. The two then traded blows, ending each game in a draw, but at the last minute in both of the last two games it was Amy Wang who took the lead. Game 4 went to Wang 15-13, and the fifth game went to Wang 12-10. It was closely fought, but the top seed went down 4-1, allowing the fourth seed to reach the final.
In the other half of the draw, Lily Zhang took care of business. She defeated third-seeded Mo Zhang 4–0 and advanced to face Wang. The final followed a similar script to the semi-final for Amy Wang. She won the first two matches, one with a very narrow score of 14-12. The two players then played a series of exciting matches. After six matches, the two were tied at 3-3, with Wang seemingly the better player in both serve and power, but with Zhang showing poise and consistency. The last match was all about Wang’s strength. She started strong and led 5-3 on the turn, but then ran away six points in a row and finished strong with a score of 11-3. Amy Wang is our America’s Cup champion.
