The American lawyer whose office has investigated the allegations of mortgage fraud against the attorney -general Letitia James of New York, has been told that he is being removed from the position, a person who is familiar with the case on Friday the Associated Press, amid a push of officials of the Trump of the President of the President of the President.
The step to replace Erik Siebert, a career officer of justice in the prestigious eastern district of Virginia, was described by a person who was not authorized to discuss the case and spoke about the state of anonymity. It was unclear which civil servant Siebert said that he was being deleted, what reason was given or who could replace him.
The status of any leadership change remained unclear because no public announcement had been made on Friday afternoon. Spokespersons of the Seibert office and the Ministry of Justice refused to comment.
The development comes as civil servants of Trump administration aggressively that accusations against James arising from alleged paper discrepancies on her mansion in Brooklyn and a house in Virginia. The Ministry of Justice has carried out the investigation for months, but does not yet have to file a complaint, and there is no indications that public prosecutors have succeeded in discovering a degree of taxing evidence that is necessary to establish an indictment.
Insofar as the effort to replace Siebert is designed to speed up criminal charges, the step will probably deepen the concern that the department already investigates those other public figures that Donald Trump regards as enemies – is armed by a White House that wants to use his prosecution for the reimbursement of the compensation.
James’s lawyers have strongly denied all allegations and characterized the investigation as an act of political revenge.
ABC News would first report that civil servants in line with the President Officers of Justice under pressure to submit charges and that the Republican government prepared for Oust Siebert, who was nominated by Trump to the top track in the office after he had worked there for more than ten years.
James has long been a special source of indignation for Trump, partly due to a civil lawsuit that she has filed against him and his company that resulted in a huge financial fine. That penalty was thrown away in August by a Court of Appeal that closely confirmed the finding of a judge that Trump had taken on fraud for decades by exaggerating his wealth.
The case has taken a series of unorthodox turns. It turned out in August that Ed Martin, who helps the working group of the Ministry of Justice and helps to coordinate the investigation, sent a letter in which he encouraged James to resign from office “as an act of good faith” after starting his mortgage fraud investigation of her. He later appeared outside of James’s Brooklyn Townhouse in a trench coat in a “Columbo” style. A writer of New York Post on the spot noted that he told a neighbor: “I just look at houses, interesting houses. It is an important house.”
The lawyer of James, Abbe Lowell, said Martin in a letter that the request for the resignation of James defended the Ministry of Justice and Codes of professional responsibility and legal ethics.
The Ministry of Justice “has a strong policy against the use of investigations and against the use of public prosecutor to achieve political goals,” wrote Lowell. “This is increasingly the case when that requirement is made to take political revenge against an official in the counterparty.”
A former police officer of the District of Columbia, Siebert, joined the eastern district of Virginia – a public prosecutor for the Ministry of Elite Ministry of Justice with a history of advanced national security and criminal cases – in 2010. He was appointed by the role of American lawyers by Trump in May with the support of the two Democraticen Kaine.
The office was individually involved in investigating cases with regard to years old investigation into potential ties between Russia and Trump’s victorious 2016 presidential campaign, a long -term complaint from the president. No charges have been announced as part of that work.
Although American lawyers are presidential instructed, they are rarely fired. But the Trump government has repeatedly standards and traditions that are meant to isolate the prosecutors of the political influence of the White House, repeatedly ignore. Public Prosecutors and other support staff who worked on the special Raadsteam of Jack Smith that Trump has investigated and prosecuted, his fired, just like Mururene Comey, whose father, former FBI director James Comey, was terminated by Trump months in his first presidency in the middle of the Middle Survey.
Martin’s investigation stems from a letter Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte who was sent to Attorney General Pam Bondi in April in which she asks her to investigate and consider James, claimed that she had “falsified bank documents and ownership registers”.
Pulte, whose agency Mortgage Financiers Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac regulates, called ‘media reports’ and claimed that James had mentioned a false house in Virginia as her main residence, and he suggested that she may have tried to avoid higher interest rates that often apply to second houses.
Records show that James was mentioned as a CO-borror on a house that bought her niece in 2023. Lowell said that records and correspondence easily refuted the statement of Pulte. While James signed a power-of-actorney form that, Lowell said, “said the property that he was wrong to be Mrs. James’ main residence,” she sent an e-mail to her mortgage loan broker around the same time that made it clear, the real estate “will not be my primary home”.
