The short answer to the above question is no, I am not an influencer in any way. The deeper answer is that I don’t want to put my life out in the open, nor do I want my face and thoughts spread across social media. Honestly, it seems exhausting, and I know I could be using that time better for a plethora of things. That said, today’s news on the left was pretty awesome to see as the Colorado Avalanche went ahead and promoted Kim Weiss to a permanent assistant coach with the Colorado Eagles of the AHL, making her only the second woman to coach at that level! However, I asked the above question because I outlined her credentials as to why she deserves a shot at the AHL level after filling in on the bench for Derek Army on Tuesday night. Maybe read the Colorado Avalanche Hockey blog in Canada? It would be incredibly delusional of me to even assume that, so the coincidence of me talking about Kim Weiss and the resulting promotion she received from the Avalanche organization has no correlation whatsoever beyond Avalanche’s recognition of her talent. Honestly, good for the Avalanche for giving Kim this opportunity to prove herself even more, as she has shown in her stops along the way to this point that she knows the game inside and out.
“Kim has done a tremendous job since joining the Eagles coaching staff, and this is a well-deserved promotion,” said Avalanche Assistant GM and Eagles General Manager Kevin McDonald said today. “We are excited to see her continued contributions to the team’s success moving forward.”
Again, it’s hard to argue why this took longer than it should have, but the Avalanche finally came together. All Weiss did during her time at Trinity College as a player was win, and that has translated into her coaching career, where she helped the Maryland Black Bears of the NAHL improve all aspects of their game before returning to Trinity College as an assistant coach with the men’s hockey team, which was nearly unbeatable during her time on the bench.
Weiss couldn’t get the win in her first game as an assistant coach, but she will get her first game as an official assistant coach tomorrow at home against the Henderson Silver Knights. The Eagles are 3-1-0 against Henderson this season, with two of those wins coming in overtime, and the Eagles own the highest points percentage in the Pacific Division with a 22-8-4 record despite ranking second in total points. If Weiss can add a little more to the Eagles, they should be able to overtake the Ontario Reign with three games in hand!
I’m glad she’s getting a chance to show her stuff because it seemed like Kim Weiss was destined for more in the AHL than just being a video coach. That’s not to say video coaches aren’t important, but Kim Weiss’ career didn’t seem destined to end at that level. The Colorado Avalanche rewarded their hard work today with a well-deserved promotion. Congratulations, Kim!
After Jessica Campbell missed out in back-to-back years, could we see Kim Weiss’ name as the first female coach to win the Calder Cup? That could be within reach for the Colorado Eagles this season!
Until next time, keep your sticks on the ice!
