Alonso surprises in First Singapore GP Practice | Racer

Fernando Alonso was at the top of the opening session in the Singapore Grand Prix for Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen.

Titelleider Oscar Piastri was the best-placed McLaren driver, the Australian Lapping Fifth and 0.364s of the pace.

The non-representative session during the day before the nocturnal Grand Prix started with an ambient temperature of 84 degrees F and with moisture that floating with a clogged 72 percent. The well-used Marina Bay streets also started dirty, with the evolution of the track predictably high until the first 60-minute session.

Alonso controlled the late afternoon conditions to surpass the session with a best time of 1m31.116s, in which the Spaniard ended the hour with the fastest opening sector. It is the first time that Alonso has led a session this season.

Leclerc hit 0.15s from the pace, while Verstappen, upcoming in Singapore on a biped line, was back 0.126s back.

Lewis Hamilton needed three laps on soft tires to go to fourth place, after he had left his first because of the traffic and that he had found more than 0.7s of the pace with his second. His best time brought him 0.364S on Drift from Alonso.

Piastri also needed several attempts to set his best time, after his first attempt, the Australian had complained about a “very undervered” car. A second round after a few tweaks brought him to the fifth and 0.365s of the pace, despite the tapping of the wall that turn 17.

His teammate, Lando Norris, followed in the sixth, the Brit 0.217s slower than the sister car.

Isack Hadjar was seventh for racing bulls for an impressive Carlos Sainz, who led the session early and whose best round – 0.696’s from Alonso’s tempo – was put on the medium -sized tires, the Williams driver who had not used the softs.

Yuki Tsunoda was ninth for Red Bull Racing – 0.468s behind teammate Verstappen – for Esteban Ocon to complete the top 10.

George Russell became 11th for Mercedes and 1.023S of the pace, but the Mercedes driver did not taste the Soft Tyre all session after putting his best time on mediums.

Nico Hulkenberg was 12th for Pierre Gasly and Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the Italian also shuns the softs in favor of mediums for his fastest round.

Liam Lawson was 15th for Oliver Bearman, Gabriel Bortoleto, Lance Stroll-Die 1,918S was slower than his session teammate of Aston Martin-and Franco Colapinto.

Alex Albon’s session only lasted two laps before the rear brakes on his Williams set fire to themselves, eliminating it from the session. The team said it was convinced that the car would be ready to use for the crucial second practice session, the only hour of free running in the circumstances that are representative for qualifying and the race.
