Alexander Isak will get a new manager on Monday after his dismissal – Official announcement

Alexander Isak now has a new manager.

Graham Potter confirmed this in an official statement on Monday morning (see below).

This follows the sacking of Jon Dahl Tomasson by Sweden.

Graham Potter will become Sweden’s new head coach on a short-term deal, with a contract for the World Cup qualifiers against Switzerland and Slovenia in November, as well as a possible play-off in March, and will be automatically extended through to next summer’s World Cup finals if Sweden qualify.

Interesting to see if Graham Potter goes through with Tomasson’s decision to give the captaincy to someone of Alexander Isak’s character.

Newcastle United duo Anthony Elanga and Emil Krafth are both hoping for better times to come with Graham Potter in charge of Sweden.

Sweden FA official announcement – October 20, 2025:

Graham Potter becomes the new captain of the men’s national team. The aim is to create optimal conditions to reach the Football World Cup in the summer of 2026.
– Together with the players, I want to realize the fans’ dream of a championship summer, says Graham Potter.

After only one point after the first four games in this autumn’s World Cup qualifiers, the board of the Swedish Football Association opted last Tuesday to terminate the appointment of national captain Jon Dahl Tomasson.

The national men’s team will be managed by Graham Potter from Monday 20 October. The agreement extends across the current qualifying period with matches against Switzerland and Slovenia in November and a possible play-off in March, and will be automatically extended through the World Cup play-offs next summer if Sweden qualify there.

– I am very humbled by the assignment, but also incredibly inspired. Sweden has fantastic players who perform during the week in the best leagues in the world. My job will be to create the conditions so that we as a team can perform at the highest level to take Sweden to the World Cup next summer, said Graham Potter.

Graham Potter, 50 years old from England, has solid experience of British football and a good knowledge of Swedish football after seven successful years (2011-2018) at Östersunds FK. After his stay in Sweden, in which Graham Potter led Östersund FK to European Cup matches, he has had various coaching assignments in England at clubs such as Swansea City (Championship), Brighton & Hove Albion, Chelsea and West Ham in the Premier League.

The chairman of the Swedish Football Association, Simon Åström, is satisfied with the quick turnaround in finding a good solution for the national men’s team.

– It is still our goal to go to the World Cup next summer. Our hope is to play the play-offs in March and all the decisions we have made now have been based on optimizing the conditions to achieve our goal. “We have been working on this process in a structured and focused manner over the past week and with Graham Potter we will have strong and experienced leadership that has been tested at the highest level,” he says.

Kim Källström, football director at SvFF:

– It feels really good that Graham is taking over as national team captain for the men’s national team. We are all aware of the situation we find ourselves in and believe that with his leadership qualities he will bring the team together in a good way. He is tactically skilled in creating conditions to win matches and has the ability to identify players’ strengths and how they best interact with each other.

The new captain of the national team takes office today and will immediately start working on the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.”
