Manchester United officially parted ways with head coach Ruben Amorim this morning after a 1-1 draw at Elland Road on Sunday.
However, the dismissal is almost certainly related to a breakdown in communication between Amorim and the United hierarchy, rather than a performance-related issue.
The Portuguese coach held a sharp post-match press conference after the Leeds deadlock, which appeared to take aim at his superiors with ambiguous statements about his control at the club.
Axed United star reacts to sacking
Amorim received the backing of the United board in the summer after a 15th-place finish in the Premier League and an uneventful defeat in the Europa League final, both of which could have been good enough to seal his fate before his first full season in charge.
Instead, Amorim dismissed the players he deemed unsuitable and was given a war chest worth more than £200 million, which he invested in a revamped front line.
One of the players bombed out of Old Trafford was Alejandro Garnacho, who found his way to Stamford Bridge after a falling out with United’s head coach.
Garnacho’s attitude has been questioned a few times since his arrival into the first team and Amorim’s no-nonsense approach made the winger redundant.
There is clearly no love lost between the pair, with Garnacho responding to a social media post confirming Amorim’s departure from the Theater of Dreams.
Fabrizio Romano was one of many to announce the news that Amorim’s reign had come to an end, and the Argentina international immediately responded by liking the post.
Amorim is right to let Garnacho leave Old Trafford
The numbers will not look favorably on the outgoing head coach, but there is no doubt that his push for higher standards at the club was more in line with what would be expected at Old Trafford.
Despite a few key moments, including the FA Cup final opener against Manchester City, Garnacho’s antics were out of character for a young prodigy cutting his teeth at the biggest club in the world.
Both on and off the pitch, results have not been backed up by consistent performances, and his early performances at Chelsea have not done much to prove Amorim wrong in approving his sale.
Tensions reached a breaking point after the Europa League final, when Garnacho made public his disappointment at starting as a substitute and Amorim brutally told him his days at United were numbered.
However, small actions like these on social media only confirm that Amorim was right to let the 20-year-old go, despite his talent that could have made him a useful squad player at the club.
Now both are moving on to careers outside Manchester, with Amorim officially leaving the club after just 14 months in charge.
