In 2026, INEOS hopes to further strengthen Ruben Amorim’s squad as they move closer to assembling his dream team.

But while they want to add reinforcements, it is from Manchester United

Tough decisions will have to be made on a number of current players, with the contracts of Casemiro and Harry Maguire among others due to expire next summer. INEOS faces the difficult choice of whether to extend these deals or let them expire.

Smith on Casemiro’s importance at United

As the hierarchy weigh whether the duo should leave, writes former Manchester United striker Alan Smith Manchester Worldhas urged them to make the sensible decision on Casemiro.

“I love it when it’s used the right way,” Smith said. “When they went to Liverpool, to Anfield, he was brilliant.”

“I feel like he might not be able to play every game. If you use him in the right way, I’m sure he can be a real asset, especially in the big games where he certainly has the experience.”

“You need experience, and a lot of work is done between Saturday’s game and Saturday’s game, everywhere and in the locker room, where he may also bring a lot with him.”

Few could dispute Smith’s claims. He is clearly calling for Casemiro’s contract to be extended, and United would be wise to listen.

Casemiro has become an integral part of Amorim’s tactical plan, forging a deal with Bruno Fernandes that reflects the Portuguese tactician’s demands on his midfielders. If he stays, he could prove invaluable in helping new midfield players adapt to Amorim’s system.

United does have the option to extend his contract for another year. However, reports indicate that his wages are too high. INEOS is reluctant to initiate the extension as they want to reduce United’s wage costs.

However, talks are expected over an entirely new contract, which could involve a pay cut, but whether the Brazilian will agree to this remains to be seen.

Plan when Casemiro leaves

Should United ignore Smith’s advice and let Casemiro leave, the consequences could be significant. There have been suggestions that Fernandes and Marcus Rashford could follow him out the exit door, paving the way for a £250m midfield overhaul.

Apparently United are willing to sacrifice the trio to bring in Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton and Carlos Baleba, new faces aimed at reshaping Amorim’s midfield for the future.
