Alan Shearer has picked the eleven players (and manager) who impressed him most in last weekend’s top-flight games.

The player turned pundit and named his Premier League team of the week.

The NUFC legend included two players who stood out in the Everton 1 Newcastle 4 match.

A great performance and a deserved win, with United well deserving of their win and having quite a few more great chances to score more than the four they conceded.

The Alan Shearer Premier League team of the week:

Emiliano Martínez (Aston Villa)
“Excellent performance. Made some brilliant saves to keep a clean sheet, including two standouts against Jorgen Strand Larsen and Yerson Mosquera.”

Kenny Tete (Fulham)
“Showed his quality at both ends of the pitch. He scored the opening goal to put Fulham on their way to a first away league win of the season and kept Spurs’ attackers quiet.”

Malick Thiaw (Newcastle United)
“Thiaw epitomized everything Newcastle did well at Everton. Defended superbly and scored his first two goals for the club, including the fastest Premier League goal this season after just 52 seconds!”

Trevoh Chalobah (Chelsea)
“Score with a brilliant header and was a solid presence at the heart of Chelsea’s defense in their impressive draw against Arsenal.”

Dan Burn (Newcastle United)
“Excellent performance from the centre-back, who returned to the starting line-up and formed a dominant partnership with Thiaw.”

Reece James (Chelsea)
“Exceptional performance from the captain. Physically dominant in midfield despite his partner there, Caicedo, being sent off. Showed his class on the ball, with his corner creating Chalobah’s opener.”

Boubacar Kamara (Aston Villa)
“Another brilliant performance in midfield capped off with a stunning long-range strike against Wolves, straight into the top corner, giving Villa all three points in the Midlands derby.”

Phil Foden (Man City)
“Underlines why he is so important to Manchester City, and shows they can still win games when Erling Haaland doesn’t score. His stoppage-time winner could prove to be a big moment in the title race.”

Bruno Fernandes (Man U)
“The captain was crucial as Manchester United made a big improvement in the second half, scoring some smart free-kicks for both Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount.”

Cody Gakpo (Liverpool)
“He provided the crucial pass that Alexander Isak needed to score his first league goal for Liverpool. Gakpo then sealed the victory with a great finish in his own style.”

Igor Thiago (Brentford)
“Now in double figures for the season after scoring twice against Burnley. Showed great composure to take a penalty late on at 0-0 and score after missing one at Brighton last weekend.”

Trainer: Enzo Maresca (Chelsea)
“Deserves so much credit for the way Chelsea played, especially as they were down to ten men for so long. Maresca’s men were well organised, allowing the league leaders only a handful of chances, and they fully deserved some of the points.”

My thoughts

I can’t argue with either of Alan Shearer’s Newcastle United choices.

So many candidates in black and white.

Ironic that with such a dominant away win and four goals scored, two central defenders are selected as the standouts.

However, they were both excellent in defense as Everton were limited to two attempts on target, plus the small fact of Malick Thiaw conceding two of the four goals AND Dan Burn assisting for Lewis Miley’s goal!
