Nathan Aké has revealed he has been told he risks missing out on the Dutch squad for the World Cup unless he can earn regular minutes at Manchester City.

Aké has made just two appearances in the Premier League so far this season, with Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol preferred at center back. The emergence of Nico O’Reilly has also limited the number of potential minutes at left-back, leaving Aké at risk of losing his place in the Dutch side.

The 30-year-old has been linked with a move away from the Etihad this month and has admitted he is under pressure from the Dutch squad to play more minutes.

He played just 21 minutes in City’s last 11 league games and was an unused substitute on eight occasions. His last 90 minutes came against Everton on October 18.

The best defense in the Netherlands, with Virgil, Matthics de Ligt, Micky Ven de Ven and Stefan de Vrije in the battle for a central defender.

Speaking to Manchester City journalist Simon Bajkowski of the Manchester Evening News, Aké said he will continue to fight for his place, but revealed the talks he has had with Dutch manager Ronald Koeman.

“Ronald Koeman has said to me a few times that he wants me to play more and that it is difficult to call me up if I don’t play a lot, that’s clear,” he said.

“Every player wants to play as much as possible. All I can say is that I keep fighting every time.”
