The future of web development is of problem solutions
The headlines are everywhere: large agencies and technology companies cut staff, stating budget pressure and new AI efficiency. Last week, Drawn confirmed a reduction of 4-5% in its workforceWith CEO Justin Livesay that notices “Early AI influences”Allow some projects to be completed in much less time.
The economy of web development is shifting rapidly. I am thinking back to the days that a freelancer could build a sustainable company that delivers the bread and butter brochure site: text, images and a contact form. Couple that with a monthly care plan and you can keep the lights on. Those days have disappeared.
Today’s tools make it easy for most companies to run a basic site themselves when they are willing to invest a little time. That said, there will always be customers who prefer a professional to tackle everything, no matter how refined the tools will be. But that pool of customers is becoming smaller – the low side of the market disappears quickly.
Our survival as agencies does not only depend on technical skills. It depends on our ability to diagnose the real problem behind the needs of a customer, to implement technology that actually solves and a coach and counselor for the customer throughout the process.
This is where AI can be a disruptor or a multiplier. Jonathan Bossenger’s Recent Post About whether AI will replace developers, makes a critical point: “At the end of the day, AI development tools are at their best when used as productivity aids – never as replacements for human expertise or supervision.” It is a valuable lecture.
There is still enough room for agencies to thrive when we are in the gap between business needs and technology. We can find a valuable place in mapping solutions for real customer problems, carefully evaluating whether the output of AI is correct and implement results that actually solve the problem. Just as important, we have to translate the technical details into a clear language that our customers can understand.
If all you know is web technology, the AI revolution can feel frightening – and rightly so! But if you can work with people, form technology in real solutions and support them during the process, then the future is bright.
