Luke Donald admitted that his heart was in his throat in Bethpage Black on Sunday when the Furious Ryder Cup rally of the Americans was just short, allowing Europe to hold a 15-13 victory.
But although Donald may have started to sweat on Sunday while a flood of Red went on the board, the outcome was only temporarily doubtful. The Europeans arrived on Sunday singles on Long Island with a huge 12-5 lead over the Americans after dominating the first two days, thanks to Donald’s nearly striking plan and his team. While the American Captain Keegan Bradley made various curious decisions with his combinations during the first two days of the biennial event, Donald and Europe pressed all the right buttons to take the competition. In the foursome, the data-oriented approach of the Europeans yielded a 6-2 edge. In Four-Ball, Donald and his team trusted Rory Mcilroy, Jon Rahm, Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose to have enough in the tank to wear them. The result? An edge of 5.5-2.5 for Europe.
To hear Donald telling it, it was simple from Europe to win the road. He got the best from McIlroy, Rahm and Fleetwood, while the stars of the Americans did not do the same for Bradley.
But Donald’s getting up to become one of the largest Ryder Cup captains in history is of course more complex than rolling out a group of stars. Others did that and failed spectacularly, especially on the road.
Donald’s success was in the details. Each. Last. A.
After being able to convince Europe in Rome in 2023, Donald again pressed all the right buttons on Bethpage to become the fifth European captain who won on foreign soil. When the European celebration started, the Donald team spoke about his attention to detail, including changing the shampoo in the hotel, getting new bedding and covering cracks in the doors so that his team could sleep better and recover better.
“I really committed myself to this job because I feel that I owe it to the players and I owe it to the Ryder Cup, which has been so special for me. I had so many incredible experiences,” Donald said on Sunday. “So yes, I had to put my own game aside, and every day I try to think about things that can help us, come up with different things that might give us a bit ahead.
“My job is literally to give these guys a better chance to win. It can be as simple as some very small things.”
Those details fascinate in Donald, are staff and their plan. Rory Mcilroy does not play better because he has a better shampoo, but his faith and trust in Donald and his blueprint enable him to play more freely than an American side that plays tight.
A lot is taken about all the decisions about the captain of a Ryder Cup team. Some have been successful, such as Donald and Paul Azinger, and those who have flopped, such as Zach Johnson and Tom Watson.
Of course, most of the success comes home, where you have control over the course setup and the wave of energy can drive through your crowd. To win on the road, especially for Bethpage fans who exceed the line many times over three days, something is very different. Donald, who was a member of the last European team who wins in American Soil in 2012, understood how difficult that task would be and wanted to give his players the small extra juice that they would need to endure the Long Island -and to defeat a talented American side.
Donald’s Secret was not in analysis of Le Labo Shampoo, but in his understanding that his task was as a captain to give his world -class players the conviction that they could etch themselves in history. When you feed the best in the world with unbridled trust, the rest often takes care of themselves.
“Well, our theme was that we tried to win for the fifth time,” said Donald. “We talked about it at the start of the week. The practical shirts were based on the victories we already had: ’87, ’95, ’04, 2012. Everything we did was a kind of centered to, and to make the boys feel that we had done it very often. To know that it could be done.
“My job is again to give them the reasons to make them believe they can win.”
This could of course have been all Very different.
Donald was not the first European captain for the Ryder Cup 2023 in Rome. That was Henrik Stenson, who was stripped of his captain after departure to become a member of Liv Golf. The mail went to Donald in the short term. He accepted his first cup and supported it through Europe to lead to a thunderous victory on American soil. Maybe the Europeans should send a gift basket to Liv Golf.
Because no clear captain in the wings waited for the Ryder Cup 2027 in Adare Manor in Ireland, it started to go again Donald when the champagne started to flow.
“Two more years,” said Jon Rahm Sunday.
“Let’s do it again in Ireland,” Shane Lowry roared.
Donald just smiled.
“No comments,” he said.
At that time there was no need. If Luke Donald wants to go again, the course will undoubtedly be his. But that was a conversation for another day.
On Sunday, Donald’s leadership and culture did the conversation, as they had all week. And the only thing that remained was the celebration.
