After double eye surgery, UFC champion Tom Aspinall is working on ‘fighting fitness’

Tom Aspinall remains on the road to recovery after undergoing surgery on both eyes. The medical team that performed the procedure shared an update on the UFC heavyweight champion’s condition via Instagram on Tuesday. Late last year, Aspinall revealed he would have to undergo surgery after being poked in both eyes by Ciryl Gane during their title fight at UFC 321.

“Following his highly publicized eye injury, the expert team at Optegra is proud to have supported MMA fighter and UFC Heavyweight Champion Tom Aspinall,” the release said. “Over the past few months we have worked closely with him on his recovery.“After his surgery on both eyes, we continue the journey to get Tom’s vision back to fighting condition.”

Uncertain timetable

Aspinall has been dealing with vision problems since UFC 321 and shared earlier this year that he had been diagnosed with traumatic bilateral Brown syndrome, a condition that makes it difficult for an individual to move their eye freely in all directions.

The 32-year-old Brit was unable to keep up with the fouls, resulting in the fight against Gane being declared a no-contest after 4:35 of round 1. It is currently unclear when Aspinall will be allowed to compete again, but it is expected that a rematch will be booked once he is fully healthy.
