After 25 years, Levy approaches Spurs – within World Football

September 5 – For the past 25 years, Daniel Levy has been the face of Tottenham Hotspur in the boardroom. Appointed as executive chairman in March 2001, he supervised a transformation that changed Spurs into a global brand, was the most important motivation when building an ultramodern stadium and regularly supplied European football.

Now Levy has gone aside and a complicated inheritance left that is determined by both progress and persistent frustration.

The departure of Levy will be at the back of Tottenham’s UEFA Europa League Triumph last season when they defeated the fellow Premier League team, Manchester United, to claim their first piece of silverware in 17 years and qualify for the Champions League of this season.

It was a crowned moment, but even that success was overshadowed by a gloomy Premier League campaign in which the club ended 17oneOne place above the relegation zone. The Australian manager Ange Postecoglou was fired in the summer and replaced by Brentford’s Thomas Frank, a change that is emblematic for Levy’s long -term struggle to find management stability.

During his responsible time, Spurs employed an amazing 16 permanent managers.

The failure to convert infrastructure and financial strength into consistent success on pitch became the theme of the North London club, which fed the anger of supporters. At the height of last season’s malaise, banners in the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium stated: ‘Our game is about Glorie, Levy’s game is about greed’ and ’24 years, 16 managers, 1 trophy – time for change ‘. Hans to ‘Levy Out’ were a regular soundtrack for home games while he was stoically in the stands.

And yet, for all his observed errors, Levy has moved the club to 21star century. He was chairman of the £ 1 billion build of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in ancient White Hart Lane Stadium in 2019, which is now generally considered one of the best football arenas in the world.

He also led the leadership of investments in an advanced training center and youth academy, as a result of which the infrastructure of Spurs corresponded to that of Europe’s elite. Financially, Tottenham has become a powerhouse with an annual turnover in 2024 of £ 582 million.

The club is described as the most profitable in the Premier League history, with a Lean Wage Bill, and previously for this season, a careful approach to transfers.

Levy himself with pride in the journey and said: “We have built this club into a global heavyweight that competes at the highest level. More than that we have built up a community. I was lucky to work with some of the greatest people in this sport, of the team of LilyWhite House and Hotspur manner, this club will have been a suitable progress.”

His exit marks the start of a new leadership era. Peter Charrington, director of Enic, the club’s ownership group, has been appointed as non-executive chairman. Charrington recognized the turbulence of recent months, but insisted that stability is the priority.

“This is a new era of leadership for the club, on and next to the field. We are now fully focused on stability and empowerment of our talented people in the club, led by Vinai Venkatesham and his executive team,” Charreston said. Venkatesham, formerly from Arsenal, has already taken over as CEO, while Frank de Menin Ho leads the ladies team.

The departure of Levy closes a decisive chapter in the history of Spurs, and the question now is whether the structures he has built will finally deliver the success in terms of trophies he could not.
