The NBA has started an investigation into accusations that the Los Angeles Clippers bypassed the salary limit with Kawhi Leonard’s $ 48 million approval deal with aspiration. Adam Silver promised that the competition will come “to the bottom” of the allegations.
“I don’t know anything about Kawhi’s deal,” Silver said. “Show, no show. We’ll know for sure.”
“Yes, this study will take time,” said Silver. “I mean, we want to be as complete and thorough as possible, and it is my feeling to be involved with these things in the past, we will pronounce this.”
Silver also clarified his earlier comments in which he said he had never heard of the company. Silver’s remark followed a message from Pablo Torre, where he indicated that he obtained a copy of the “founding sponsor agreement” of $ 300 million from Aspiration that said that the agreement should be approved by the NBA before enforcement.
“If I said I have never heard of it, I meant in the context of the accusations here. I mean, I was certainly aware of the brand,” Silver said.
On Tuesday, Ballmer repeated his position that he was cheated by the company and said that he welcomes the probe of the NBA, which will be performed by Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz.
“This is not nice to be through,” Ballmer said. “I was personally cheated by our interactions with the company and part of the staff. The fraud expanded a bit. We had many relationships with the company – sponsor, activation, (IT) was a whole series of complicated things through carbon credits.”
“But the most important thing is that our relationship with the company, and our player’s relationship with the company, was independent, which is important according to the rules of the NBA,” said Ballmer, according to the Sports Business Journal. “I am not confident that we are (according to) the rules (so I welcome the research that the NBA is doing. It is a great way, from our perspective, to get the facts there are.”
