According to Trey Wingo, the on-air golf blunder almost ruined his career

As Trey Wingo almost explains it each The broadcaster has had that moment when an embarrassing blunder comes almost out of nowhere.

Some are worse than others, though Wingo, the longtime host and guest on last week’s broadcast Subpar podcastsaid his “almost ended my career.”

Wingo detailed the mistake on the podcast, which he said happened during one of his first late-night appearances on “SportsCenter.”

“It’s the first round of the Players Championship at Sawgrass in 1998, and the year before that John Daly had gone crazy,” Wingo said. “He’d gotten drunk, missed his tee time and trashed the apartment he was staying in, so it was his first attempt at getting sober, getting his life in order. He was stalling a year later, after hitting rock bottom.”

Wingo said Daly had just received an AA coin symbolizing another month of sober living, which Wingo planned to incorporate into his opening.

‘And I write this message and think: this will be the best in the world. The words just flow from my lips to the typewriter,” he said. “So I wrote this sentence just before he turned off: ‘John Daly received his coin, which meant [however] many months of alcohol-free living.’ So it’s the dumbest way to put it, right? It’s just inconvenient. I should have just said six months of being sober or straight, whatever. But I wrote it ‘as a sign of six months of alcohol-free living.’

“And I swear to God, as I read it on camera, I don’t know why, it came out of my mouth: ‘He received a coin that represented six months of free alcohol.’ I felt the blood rushing from my face as we went to the high points.

At the time, Wingo explained, the show was rebroadcast regularly, meaning some segments were amplified and others were shortened as the news broke. As they went to the next commercial, his coordinating producer told him, “Trey, we’re going to have to fix that lead-in for the rebroadcast.” Wingo, dejected, agreed.
