The 23-year-old saved all eight break points he faced, six of which came in the second set.

He also dug himself out of a hole when he was 15-40 in his last three matches and finally secured his victory after one hour and 35 minutes.

“I think if you don’t play the way you want to, but you still stay positive in your mindset, I think that’s true [great] for me because it has never happened in the past. So now it’s a little bit better, I’m very proud,” said Cobolli.

“I really appreciate my attitude on the pitch because it’s not easy to play against [Wu] and I think he deserved to win the first set. I put a lot of energy into my game and I think I played a very good second set.”

Cobolli next faces Miomir Kecmanovic, who followed up his victory over top-seeded Alexander Zverev by beating French left-hander Terence Atmane 6-3 6-3.

In another quarter-final, Frances Tiafoe advanced to his first Acapulco semi-final on his third match point in his eighth appearance at the event, when he defeated Italian Mattia Bellucci 6-3 6-4.

Tiafoe is seeking his fourth crown at tour level and first at 500 level and meets compatriot Brandon Nakashima who ousted sixth seed Valentin Vacherot 2-6 6-2 6-3 to advance to the semi-finals.
