The most senior officer of a 1996 NSW Crime Commission contacted the ABC following comments that were broadcast.

ABC Four corners has expressed regret over comments about Phillip Bradley, who was NSW Crime Commission commissioner in 1996.

A March 31 episode of “Crooked” featured the following comment from former NSW police officer and academic, Dr. Michael Kennedy (pictured), on Mark William Standen’s employment with the NSW Crime Commission (NSWCC) in March 1996:

“Because they never vetted him when they hired him. And that would be so [sic] the first question: ‘How on earth can you hire someone like that? Look, we told you this would happen. ”

Subsequently, then Crime Commission Commissioner Phillip Bradley contacted the ABC and expressed concern that the episode suggested that he, as the Commission’s most senior official, had failed to properly investigate Mr Standen and that Four corners had omitted to include the part of his answer relating to this:

“When the Commission hired Standen, he was known as a highly respected AFP officer. Nevertheless, he was thoroughly and properly vetted. During the course of the vetting process, the AFP and the National Crime Authority informed the Commission that nothing adverse was known about Standen. There was no basis for rejecting that advice.”

Four corners regrets the harm caused to Mr Bradley and acknowledges that his response should have been recorded to make it clear that an investigation had indeed taken place,” ABC said.

Despite ABC’s regret, quotes remain in a promo on YouTube.

Four corners will have a new executive producer, Joel Tozer, in 2026.
