A year ago, history was written today in South Paris Arena 4 as the first Paralympic Para table tennis gold medals in Doubles since 1976 was awarded in a night full of emotion and extraordinary versions. China dominated the medal receremonies and claimed that both gold medals were offered while presenting the depth and excellence that defines Paralympic table tennis at the highest level.

The evening was from China, because they both secured double titles on Commando Mode. Huang Wenjuan and Jin Yucheng opened the medal receremonies by claiming class 14 women’s doubles in gold, beating the German Stephanie Grebe and Juliane Wolf in an exciting meeting with four games (11-4, 9-11, 11-8, 11-8).

The victory had a special meaning for 16-year-old Jin Yucheng and made her paralympic debut after the start of the international competition in 2023. Her rapid rise to Paralympic champion was an example of the inspiring nature of the Paralympic sport.

“It feels so good. I never thought I could get a gold medal,” Huang reflected afterwards. “This was a very good start for the entire Chinese team. We are also good friends, and we will be even better friends after winning this gold medal together.”

The second gold medal of the evening went to China’s Liu Jing and Xue Juan in class 5 Women’s Doubles, who defeated the SEO Su Yen and Yoon Jiyu of Korea Republic with 3-1 (11-7, 11-7, 8-11, 11-9). Their victory contributed to already spectacular paralympic legacies – Liu now kept eight gold medals from four Paralympic Games, while Xue protected its fourth gold from two paralympic performances.

Both athletes have maintained perfect Paralympic records and won every event that they have arrived throughout their career. Xue’s emotional reflection has recorded the personal meaning of Paralympic success: “I am very happy to win for my daughter tonight. She is still young and I hope I can have more great stories to tell her when she grows up.”

The bronze medals provided their own compelling stories. In class 14 women’s doubles, the Felicity Packard of Great Britain and Bly Twomey Brons insured, in which the 14-year-old Twomey became one of the youngest paralympic table tennis medal winners in history.

“It feels great that I didn’t think I would get a medal so young and I was really surprised today,” said Twomey, her words that fastened the miracle of Paralympic performance.

Partner Felicity Packard thought about both the performance and the extraordinary atmosphere: “It was incredible playing with Bly and our performance to get the bronze medal. The atmosphere has just been absolutely incredible, I think we were prepared for the crowds, but nothing like this.”

Aida Music by Norway Dahlen and Merethe Tveiten shared the Bronze medals of class 14, while the Brazilian Caria Oliveira and Joyce Oliveria and Dararat Asayut and Chilchitparyak Bootwansirina in the Thailand Brons claimed in class 5.

These first medal monies from Paris 2024 set the standard for everything that would follow. The quality of competition, the emotional meaning of the victory and the incredible atmosphere in South Paris Arena 4 showed that Paralympic table tennis was never stronger or more. A year later looking out, August 31, 2024 is like the night when Paralympic table had fled tennis back into the most spectacular fashion. From Jin Yucheng’s remarkable debut triumph to the legends Liu Jing and Xue Juan who expand their perfect records, from Bly Twomey’s historical bronze to the emotional scenes of celebration in South Paris Arena 4.
